staffy buddy what would you get?
now... lets just theroize here.
asuming 95% of us on here have a staff gracing our lives, if you were to get another dog and it wasnt a staffy (money not being an issue, space not being an issue ect.) what would you get?
I would say you'd probally have to pick a breed that would survive your staffy of cause hahah
I was just thinking today on my way home from work. I have plans that when Romeo is maybe 2 that i might get a second staffy, but then i got thinking what if i didnt get a staffy? what if i got something else? what would i get? I have always loved Bull Terriers (mini) and Bostons, but bostons come with many health issues....i have issues with dogs that cant breed and birth naturally as a given rule to an entire breed....pity.

I'd love another EBT, but I'll be too old by the time I'm ready to get another dog so I might go for a mini BT.

Re: staffy buddy what would you get?
i'd love to have some form of wolfdog breed in a perfect world where you could get everything you wanted with no downsides. but unfortunately don't think buster could handle any other type of dog including another staffy living with us and i think i'd go insane owning a dog that malted heavily or with long fur lol!

Re: staffy buddy what would you get?
Well it would never happen as I would never ever choose anything else than a Staffy (people still remember I have a gameplan Tilly...Tom...and Tiny However if somebody was holding my dogs and my daughter to ransom until I chose then it would have to be a Border Collie as I grew up with them.

Re: staffy buddy what would you get?
As soon as I have the room for a second dog it would have to be from a rescue centre anyway and whoever gets on with Rocky best. My preferences dont really come into it now.

I am waiting for our new arrival, my friend is a breeder of minis and standards and he is waiting for a litter of minis in September of which I am getting a dog, so to answer the question and concur with Caryll its a MINI!!!

weimeraner. its a combo ive seen four times (including Lola and her old housemate Phoebe) and despite them being huge, clumsy, paranoid, intelligent yet stupid, they will always love you in much the same way a staffy does. i still go to my aunties every few days for a cuddle and play with her big daft boy Mojo, and everytime Lola sees one she gets excited.

For me it's just bully breeds that i'd get! I mean i have a staffy and american bulldog so far and am hoping to add a boxer pup next summer time

Re: staffy buddy what would you get?
I would get a bully type dog.
maybe a mini bull terrier, like i said before... or an Amstaff (even though its a staff its banned in so many places i dont risk getting one incase i move country)
of cause i will probally get another staff, since... one staff is never enough!

we have a rescue center here and it's full of staffs and american bull dog crosses, so we would and are considering one of those, but for now are going to volunteer as dog walkers as they are short and need them

Re: staffy buddy what would you get?
i would also love to say that i'd love to have two males, both intact, but i doubt that will ever happen. no breeder would ever sell to me knowing i already have 1 intact male
Re: staffy buddy what would you get?
If I could pick it would be a Rottweiler. Always loved the breed. American Bulldog would also be an option

Re: staffy buddy what would you get?
If it was my choice, and it was possible, I would have a house full of APBT's ... I've always loved them, and always will
But in reality, the OH and me WILL get a rescue mate for Max when the time is right ... first choice is a staffy bitch (obviously) .. OH's second choice is a Cairn Terrier (she loves um!)

ah you mean a working line GSD, yeah, i'm not so fond of the show line... it looks disabled...
Re: staffy buddy what would you get?
Taryn wrote:ah you mean a working line GSD, yeah, i'm not so fond of the show line... it looks disabled...
Don't be fooled. Many of the show dogs you see are stood to make their backs slope! The 'back' is the portion between the shoulder blades (withers) and the hips (croup) and that should be straight, but not necessarily horizontal. There are working line dogs that are shown, and there are show dogs that work. The working line dogs, when stood for the show ring, look like they have a 'sloping' back because of the way the hind legs are placed.
If you mean weak hocks, then yes, that's more prevalent in the show dogs, but not entirely confined to them.

For me it would have to be a healthy British Bulldog or a Labrador.

Re: staffy buddy what would you get?
Yeah the show type with the slanting rear legs, some of the poor dogs can hardly walk it's disgusting,it was highlighted recently on a tv programme about pedigree dogs.like I said I had one as a kid so if I get another dog it will be a gs,we actually looked at some breeders a few month back but decided the times not right at the min to add another addition and there is a lot of breeders promoting this type of dog with the poor back legs, but there is some good breeders who have bred straight back gsd for many a year with the purpose of having a healthy family dog,one in particular we looked at who bred straight backs stated her dogs would be no good for police or security work, just bred to be healthy family pets, she had many years experience her dogs come kc and with all the health tests available for this breed.so for me this would be my staffys buddy if I get him oneTaryn wrote:ah you mean a working line GSD, yeah, i'm not so fond of the show line... it looks disabled...

sorry Caryll i guess i was being vague, yes, the weak hocks are what i'm trying to point to

You see this is what I mean. They mostly all have straight 'backs'! Working line dogs just have far more drive and need a lot of work and training 7 days a week. Show lines tend to have less drive & are more likely to fit in with a general pet home.
The sloping back has nothing at all to do with weakness & everything to do with having good reach & drive. It's the 'stand' that exagerrates the slope, and when you see the same dogs in a normal stand 90% of them have level backs. It's the weak hocks that are the problem in GSDs, together with bad hips & elbows.

Re: staffy buddy what would you get?
I know that why they keep on doing it... i think 1 of many reason we have so many back yard breeders around the world becasue htye think they going to get a health dog
Re: staffy buddy what would you get?
One of the biggest problems is the ignorance/apathy of buyers. They don't do any research and don't try to find out what's best.
But anyway, this is rather off topic!

Re: staffy buddy what would you get?
i see what your saying about the backs.i know its not the backs its the legs or hocks as you say is the problem.by what imean as straight back is when i looked for breeders the term straight back came up and when i looked at these breeders the difference was evident straight away compared to breeders who were just gs breeders.it wasnt just in the stance you could see the difference it was in every picture available to view, the person i refered to was no byb btw she has many years with this breed and knows her stuff,im no dog expert all im saying is i would get one that hasnt got the problem back legs that the kc now or did encourage.the dog i had as a kid didnt look like the ones you see with the slanting legs and he was top ped.maybe these breeders should use a different term to straight back but theres no getting away from it the kc standard with these dogs is so wrongCaryll wrote:Rudyblue wrote:one in particular we looked at who bred straight backs stated her dogs would be no good for police or security work, just bred to be healthy family pets, she had many years experience her dogs come kc and with all the health tests available for this breed.so for me this would be my staffys buddy if I get him one

Re: staffy buddy what would you get?
I think you're missing the point. The pics you probably saw were all dogs that were not in a show stand. The german dog that won Crufts about 4 years ago had a really sloping topline when he was in a show stand. When he was mucking about generally, his topline was totally different.
All I'm saying is that you shouldn't discount a show breeder just because you don't like the way a show dog stands.

Re: staffy buddy what would you get?
yeah fair enough i do see your point,i know the stance is different to relaxed posture but even when theyre moving in the show ring there back end is low down compared to police dogs and even pet dogs you see on the field etc..i did see one the other day out and about and its back end was really low it only looked a young dog aswell to me it just looked so unnatural.i think there is a difference between what the kc see as a standard and what is healthyCaryll wrote:I think you're missing the point. Don't get me wrong, I'm not condoning the bad breeders. But don't tar them all with the same brush. Not all show dogs are the exagerrated type you've seen.
I post on a GSD forum & we have this sort of discussion quite regularly. There's a lady on that forum with a show dog that's done some winning. In the ring it has a sloping back (the way it's stood) and gaiting it keeps that shape because of the way it is being held & gaited. If you see the dog out of the show ring its shape is perfectly normal & he's strong & healthy.

If my next dog isn't a stafford it will be an AmStaff, APBT, Frenchie or a Poodle (I wouldn't want a Poodle unless I could afford to get it professionally groomed on a regular basis, though). If OH has his way it would be a Pomeranian or Cocker Spaniel.

I would love a great dane, but I couldnt cope with the slobber. I would like a german shepherd, preferably black, deffinatly long haired, or doberman, or rottie. Any of the big dogs. Unfortunatly OH is scared of dogs so no chance of ever getting a big dog, so we will have to stick with staffies and cresties!

If not another Staffie, it would be a cross from rescue. Medium size, tough and maybe a little quieter than Tyson.

He has met my nans GSD Harley. He is BIG black and long haired, but soft as anything. OH is okish around him, but still a bit nervous. He was pinned to the floor and almost attacked by one when he was younger. I was really suprised when he said I could get a staffy as the first time he ever met one he litterally ran off and cleared a fence running away from it! I couldnt have run if I wanted too, I was too busy laughing!
