sitting on me feet.
when im sitting in my chair watchng telly or with the laptop ect macks often comes over and sits directly on top of my feet, does anybody else's dog do this and whats it all about?? i have read that it could be either a dominant thing or showing affection?? dont think its him trying to dominate me. any thoughts on this.

Re: sitting on me feet.
I've always taken it that they need to know where you are, so they lay on your feet & even if they go to sleep you can't move without them knowing!
Could also be a sort of comfort - a way of being in physical contact with their owners. I don't think it's a dominance thing, either.

Have always been lead to believe its an affectionate thing and its there way of being and staying close you.
I used to run a social club and she would sit on the members feet all the time, much to there "does your dog need to wipe its bum on my shoes" lol!!, but only ones she really new, ie where in everynight. She doesn't do it to me much anymore though,

Re: sitting on me feet.
Biddy (RIP) used to do this all the time, mainly with me. When the children were babies she used to sit on the feet of whoever was holding them, we always said she was keeping her eye on them and the person couldn't move with her babies without her knowing! Great foot warmer though. More comfort and closeness than dominance I think. x

Milly does this all the time if we go out and stop talking she sits on my feet i thought it was because she didnt want a cold bum

Re: sitting on me feet.
I think its quite possessive, controling your moments or protectiveness feeling she need to protect you or others but she shouldn't unless one is in a weak state not performing pack leadership, but many have different opinions.

Re: sitting on me feet.
I want to believe it is a sign of affection because every dog I have ever owned has done it and I didn't really mind it, but it is truely a sign of dominance. Just like your dog wanting to go out of a door or gate before you (DOMINANCE) . We have to take the lead and be a packleader.

Re: sitting on me feet.
dont agree with all this not performing pack leadership and having to take the lead and be pack leader rubbish, jesus the dog is just sitting on my feet being affecionate he sits there proud and keeps leaning his head back to be stroked looking at me with that soft look as they do, pack leadership nonsence has nothing to do with it.

Re: sitting on me feet.
I still think its dominance how ever soft or cute they do it, dominance has nothing to do with aggression she is still controling your movements, laying on the settee next to you and really leaning on you pushing even, you really feel their weight that is dominance, A submissive dog will give you distance unless you want other whys.

didint say you are wrong just said i dont agree,
thats MY thoughts!!!
my dog knows who is boss in my house and i wouldnt let him dominate me in anyway he doesnt try to
and if he lying beside me or on me for that matter he is being affecionate not dominating at all i would know the difference i think some people take owning a dog far to serious and would prefere them to be robots instead of pets
that will only fart if you tell them to i would like to think my dog can be close to me when he wants instead of thinking he can only be affecionate when he is told he can thats just not right. rant over flame proof suit is on fire away!!!

What part is not true? And i am well aware it is opinionated which is why i said i still "think" but then after a full stop i placed a fact in there.

Re: sitting on me feet.
Dempsey knows exactly who is boss, and he is an ultra dominant dog. He does, however, sit on my feet & climb up beside me on the sofa sometimes. I'm of the opinion that it's affection & comfort, both for him & me!
That's ok. We both know what's what!

Re: sitting on me feet.
Taz used to be extremely dominant he used lean on me, sit on my feet and not give me any space whether i was going from sink to fridge which is 3 feet away, but once i got my head around it and knew what i was doing, he stopped now he gives me my own space. Caryll i can not see how you can say he is so dominant and yet he knows who is boss, if he's not dominant then he's not towards you or other dogs because he knows your the boss and you can handle things but if he is then he is, can not just have bits and pieces a dogs mind doesn't work like that they don't rationalise.

Re: sitting on me feet.
Could this not just be a comfort thing for the dog? A little assurance that it's owner is there... I'm sure it's not dominance, Molly does it do me, and the OH, she knows who's boss.

Molly knows you are there, she wouldn't need to come and sit on your feet, sit next to you lay next to you deffinately not come sit on you.

I still don't believe it is a dominance thing....
Does that mean, you don't let your dog sit with you? Or let it lay with you?

Fair enough, I guess we all just have different opinions.
I think Molly just does it to be annoying, because as soon as you wiggle your toes she moves off them

I agree MissRogue If your dog is unsure of who the pack leader is they will often step-up to assume the duties. As far as affection goes, my dogs will sit with me or on me at my asking.by MissRogue Yesterday at 1:30 am

What a load of tosh! His nature is dominant - I can't change that. BUT he knows that I won't allow him to take advantage. That's where the training comes in.

Dog training has nothing to do with dog phycology, you have a dog attempting to tear someones arm off all the sits and stays in the world are not going make a difference, dominance is phycological and unless you tap into that he's going to sit there or stay with his hackles up so you don't actually fix it just ask him to do two things at once listen to you while being aggressive. Training is great for the breed but you have to control the dog first before breed then name.

Re: sitting on me feet.
I haven't a clue what you're on about. Control comes through training, not the other way around.

Re: sitting on me feet.
back to original post, Jasmine doesn't sit on my feet but she loves to either curl up in a ball next to me on the sofa or if I've got my feet up then she lays between my legs and the back of the sofa and will use my lap/legs/feet as a pillow depending on what way round she is. At the moment because the other half has disapeared upstairs she is now stretched out having a little nap zzzzzz

OK, I REALLY don't understand what you mean there. If I'm controlling/training the breed/Dempsey, then I'm controlling/training the dog. And what on earth are you talking about with the 'darting off' bit? This is about dogs sitting on feet for God's sake! Some dogs are naturally dominant in their make up. Dempsey's one of them. I therefore train him & control him to suit his temperament. He doesn't take the p**s out of me because he knows I'm more dominant than him. He DOES, however, take the p**s out of my OH because he lets him get away with it.
It actually has nothing whatsoever to do with the breed. It's just in a dog's nature - it's either dominant or it isn't, although there are different levels in between.

You just said what i said dominance has nothing to do with the breed only the dog so what i mean is one should train the dog not the breed. dog first. then you think about the breed and what the breed needs etc.

But that's what I've been saying! I never said that you must look at the breed first, it was you who said that! All I said was that Dempsey is very dominant - the most dominant dog I have known.

I think someone has been watching a little too much Cesar Milan and taking everything he says as gospel. There is more than one way to deal with dogs issues be it psychological or training.MissRogue wrote:Caryll wrote:I haven't a clue what you're on about.
