Hi Everyone
Hi Everyone
I am new to this forum but have been reading threads on here for sometime now but as I am getting a new puppy this week I have joined for some help & advice as it is actually the first time i have got a dog so young.
He will be 8weeks old when i get him, all my previous staffies have been either rescue dogs or under 1 when i got them, I am not working currently so can give him all the time & training he require's.
I have been to pick my puppy today & he is a lively little chap, I do not have any pictures until i get him home on tuesday although i do have picture's of the parent's and the puppies but as they are not my picture's i am not sure if it ok to share them or not.
He is KC registered, so a purebreed staffy, black mask & a lovely red fawn colour. There was only 2 males left & one was very timid but the one i picked came up to me and licked me & started to play with my shoe lace's
My main concern currently is getting him house-trained, is it best to use a cat litter tray rather than puppy training pads/newspaper??
Thank in advance!

Hiya and wlcome from me and Moo and congrats on your new addition!
Its been a long time since I had a pup, I prefered not to paper train but just took her out every half hour and loads of praise if she went.
I did put paper down at the back door so save any accidents but she was never trained to go there

Re: Hi Everyone
Hi Gazagem
I agree staffies are clever, my old one was almost too clever for her own good!
I have never used a crate/cage in the past, when I go out I will leave the dog in the tiled hallway with all door's closed but I will certainly look into getting one, I can't afford a new one so will keep my eye on gumtree for a cheap one.
In all honesty the times that I will be going out without my dog will be very few so i am not sure if there would be much benefit of having a crate?
Actually it might be useful for night time to stop me from putting the dog on the bed next to me :-$

I'd let him settle in for a week before you take him for his 1st jabs, he'll be less stressed that way!
A crate was a life saver for me. I'd never had one before but was advised to by an EBT breeder who told be about their propensity for chewing & swallowing anything & everything. It's now his 'den' and he goes in & out when he likes, and he sleeps in there when we're out & at night, but with the door left open nowadays!

Re: Hi Everyone
Hi All
I did not get the puppy that i had intended as it turned out he was only 5weeks old & was not KC registered & bred from untested parent's. The parent's were KC registered but after i done some google research i discovered he had bought the dad for £200 locally along with his brother who was nowhere to be seen! The dad was only 10months old too.
I lost the £100 i had put down as the "breeder" refused to give me my money back even though there was no mention of a non-refundable deposit Oddly enough it turn's out he is a well respected international coach...
Every cloud has a silver lining.........
I rescued a 10week old puppy, the owner was had a litter of 12 puppies and was planning on drowning them, i have no idea if he is just a mongrel or what bully breed but he is so cute and he is my little shadow, i have called him Buddy.
Here are some picture's:

Re: Hi Everyone
I have to say I am well proud of my buddy.
He has learnt so much! He know's his name, play's fetch & is very intelligent & alert.
Best of all, he is was easy to paper train, took him all of 1 day to learn to pee on the paper but if i catch his sign's early enough i take him outside but he is scared of the wind so has not had his first toilet outside yet due to the wonderful uk summer we are enjoying.
He has been wormed this week, poor buddy was riddled with them & i never want to see or eat spaghetti bolognaise ever again!!

Re: Hi Everyone
What a sweet looking boy. He looks so thin, though, poor little thing. What a start in life. Never mind, I'm sure he'll thrive under your care!
He doesn't look 10 weeks, though. Maybe just because he's thin.
I know what you mean about the worms - makes spaghetti less tasty!

Hi
Yes he is a cutie & has won my heart already. How old do you think he is? The picture's above were taken the day i got him (tuesday) I have been feeding him little amounts often & he is starting to fatten up now. I am not sure if he is a staffy or a bull mastiff? i have never seen a staffy with a black mask like his & he seems rather tall & athletic for a staffy. he like a little monkey, he climbs up my body for some hugs & loving
I will try & get some good picture's of him 2moro so you can see how big he is
e2a- wiggly worms & bum gravy =

Re: Hi Everyone
I wouldn't say bullmastiff - not really chunky enough. Staffy cross? Don't know what with, though. I take it the 'breeder' (for want of a better word) didn't say? A lot of fawn staffs have a mask with dark shading on the ears, tail & sometimes down the back. It's called Smut Markings.
He looks about 7 or 8 weeks, but as I said, that could just be because he's thin. At least he looks bright eyed & happy!

Re: Hi Everyone
Hi Caryll
I took him from a man I met in a homeless shelter hostel place, his staffy had been mated accidentely & he was unable to keep the puppies any longer due to circumstances mainly being money related as he could not afford the food for 12 puppies as they were being kept at a friend's, I gave him all the money I had on me at the time (£300) & asked him to try & find home's for the other's or take them to the dog's home rather than drown them! I was tempted to take more than one from him as there was a couple of really cute brindle's but Buddy caught my eye with his mask & was one of the smaller one's, the mother looked liked a very borderline staffy x... 100% not KC purebreed.
I have never heard of smut marking's, I like them. In this part of the world most staffies are either black, white or brindle, red's & fawn's are somewhat of a rarity for some reason.
I do not care what he is or what he grow's up to look like, he is such a loving dog & I have all the time in the world for him.
Here is a couple of more shot's i took earlier this week.

Is is definately too thin but should be okay once he is eating good food regularly. Glad to see you got the crate and hope he is settling in nicely.

Re: Hi Everyone
Hi jstaff
I am doing my best to fatten him up & he has settled in very well, in all honesty he has been sleeping on my bed the first few night's and even that was difficult to get him to settle down as he only seem's comfortable in the room where his crate is, he does eat in his crate & go in by himself for a rest & the couple of times i have gone out i have put him in the crate and when i returned he was fast asleep
I took him for a walk in around the block yesterday in my arm's & a girl stopped me and asked if i had found him, i said "no, he is mine" and she looked a bit gutted lol his little tail has not stopped wagging since he got home

Re: Hi Everyone
If you don't want him to sleep with you in the bed in the future you could always try putting his crate in your room. Nothing wrong with them sleping on the bed though.

Re: Hi Everyone
I've got to say, he's a very attractive little guy!
If he's more comfortable in the room where his crate is, then let him sleep there. The crate will become his den & he'll use it for sleep, relaxation, comfort & security. I don't let my boy sleep on my bed because he's much too big & tends to suddenly bark at strange noises in the night! He either sleeps on the sofa or in his crate, he makes his mind up himself & I suspect he ranges between the two overnight although he's almost always in his crate come morning.
I've had dogs sleep on my bed before, although not the biguns! At one point I had two GSDs & a GSD cross - there wasn't enough room for all three of them, let alone me & the oh as well!

Hi Everyone
I have to say all your dog's are lovely, I am biased though as i have only ever owned staffies
my girlfriend was not impressed by having Buddy in the bed when she came to stay so i am going to be keeping him in his crate overnight from now on, my main worry is him doing a poo in there but i guess all will be ok, i have put him the crate a few times today & he screams the place down!

Re: Hi Everyone
Well done for coming to the rescue of sweet little Buddy (love the name too). A crate is a great idea for when you go out you know he wont come to any harm and it is his little bedroom if you like, a safe haven and somewhere he can just go to be quiet.
Hope you have lots of fun with the Buddy he is so cute, you will find loads of advice on training around the forum and please dont be afraid to ask any questions, there's always someone here who can help.
Playing games will help to keep Buddys mind occupied, try hiding toys and treats around the floor for him to find or wrap them up in an old blanket or jumper so he can sniff them out.
Do you have a park local where you can socialise Buddy with other dogs? This will be great training for him to meet and play with all shapes and sizes of dogs.
Have fun with him and enjoy

Re: Hi Everyone
Hi Kathy
I originally named him snappy but when he follow's me around i am "come on buddy" so it has kind of stuck
There is not a dog park as such locally but i am not a fan of dog park's, i do not believe our bully type breed's belong there, no reason other than OTHER dog's & the owner's in ability to control them, from experience.
I do have place's to walk him where he will meet other dog's & once he has had his injection's he will be walked regularly so will get used to meeting people.
I have been trying out a collar & lead today, he is having none of it, not even with a treat in front of him so we have gone back to playing fetch & trying to get him to toilet outside, i spent an hour with him in the garden but he did nothing & has come in & gone straight to sleep!
I will try again when we wakes lol

I agree staffies are clever, my old one was almost too clever for her own good!
I have never used a crate/cage in the past, when I go out I will leave the dog in the tiled hallway with all door's closed but I will certainly look into getting one, I can't afford a new one so will keep my eye on gumtree for a cheap one.
In all honesty the times that I will be going out without my dog will be very few so i am not sure if there would be much benefit of having a crate?
Actually it might be useful for night time to stop me from putting the dog on the bed next to me :-$
If your tiled hallway is suitable i would leave the pup there and if they then get to the point of being distructive then think about crates, im not a fan of them and much prefer a dog to be left in a kitchen/hall if possible.

Hi
Janey he is fine after his visit to the vet, he was a little sleepy but woke up & ate some food & has been his normal playful self & i have to agree he is very bright, i am not working currently so have all day to train him which is why he has learnt so much in such a short space of time

Re: Hi Everyone
Hi
Buddy has had his final jabs today. He is sleepy, same as last time really, hopefully he will be his normal bouncy self in the morning.
He has finally mastered "Wait" & is getting used to having a harness on, he doesn't like the lead much but has another staffy as a friend now so when he see's her walking on the lead, he will follow happily, well that is the plan!
He weigh's just over 5kg & is 11wks old. The vet was very impressed by his skill's today as i tutted when she just put a treat down in front of him & said "you should have asked for his paw!"
Buddy was such a good boy he refused to eat from a stranger's (vet) hand & only took the treat after I asked for his paw & gave it to him
e2a: If anyone is interested his diet is:
james well beloved & burns puppy kibbles & Burns potato & pork kibbles. (all 3 mixed up in one bag) served with ice cold Goat's Milk in the morning.
Lunch & dinner is Tuna steak in sunflower oil or Sardines in sunflower oil with the mixed kibbles.
He has a raw carrot (not frozen) to nibble on in between meals along with treat's for good behaviour/training purposes.
anyway, too much chat

Re: Hi Everyone
Buddy is certainly looking more healthy now than he did before.
Glad to hear the training is going well for you both. The Burns and James Welbeloved are both very good foods, can you not decide which one you want to feed?
Cracking pics thanks for sharing.

Re: Hi Everyone
Hi Kathy
I am planning on keeping him on Burn's, the JWB was something my girlfriend picked up on the first day we got him but I prefer Burn's out of the 2 as it not as "powdery" as JWB.
The first picture below is when i foolishly gave him a whole tin of tuna steak in sunflower oil, i split it into 2 meals now but check out his pot belly!
The next picture is of Buddy sunbathing, he was enjoying being out in the sun!
