Weight Pulling
Just out of curiosity, does any one here do any weight pulling with their dog?
We're considering getting Molly into it, we attached a tire to her walking harness to see how she liked it, it didn't work very well, she got a bit tangled up, but she seemed to enjoy running around with the tire, when she wasn't attacking it!

Re: Weight Pulling
If you are going to get her doing the odd bit of weightpulling when you are out and about, I would invest in a proper weightpull harness so there is no unnessisary starin on her back etc.
Look up southern-staffords, he does weightpull and aces events with his dogs.

Probably just me, but I don't see the point. If you're going to enter contests, then maybe, but otherwise there are other ways of strengthening your dog and keeping him/her occupied.

Re: Weight Pulling
weight pulling is fun for the dog especially if they are the drivey type.
I agree, for starters order the right size weight pulling harness made for the exact dimensions of your dog. And just practice drag weight before even attempting hooking your dog to a cart w/ weight. Start by hooking a 3-4 ft.chain w/ about just 5-10 lbs and allowing your dog on lead to walk (slowly) just dragging the weight for about 100 yards .DO this about 3 times up and back w/ 10-15 min breaks in between. Do this every other day if you like. There is a lot of info on the internet from reputable weight pullers on the subject. I did a little weight pulling w/ my APBT's. Good luck

Re: Weight Pulling
When my boy was about 12 months my son used to train with him by rollerblading he loved it they clocked about 4 miles everyday he was all muscle and really fit it was the best condition hes ever been in. I think if your dog is fit ,healthy and enjoyes it then why not give it a try

Re: Weight Pulling
Thank you all.
We're definatly going to get her a proper harness, she seems to love pulling, she actually listens, sometimes, to the pull command when we're out walking.
Leaim's said how she'd probably love doing something like your son did with yours Gem, but I'm not safe on my own two feet, let alone roller blades!
E-Dog, thank you for the advice, we'd certainly start her off small, we gave her a lil test run on a small motorbike tire and seemed to love it.
Would you recommend actual weights, or the weighted mats?

I used actual weights only because most every thing else, especially tires they would like to turn around and try to take a bite on. They use to love hanging on tires.
Good Luck

Re: Weight Pulling
Aye, we learnt that when we used the bike tire, she turned around and started attacking the damn thing.

Re: Weight Pulling
I've always read a year old is about the right mark, their bones are close to being fully developed.
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though!

Re: Weight Pulling
lol Molly's a year now and still has a lot of energy.
I don't think we'd ever do the whole cart and weight thing with her, there's no where around here that does it really, but if all else fails, she can use the tire as a chew toy!
