How Much to Feed? Empty How Much to Feed?

Post by Guest Wed Jul 04 2012, 14:52

My puppy is 8 weeks old and I'm not sure how much to feed him. The breeder was feeding him 50 grams per meal, three times a day, so that's what I've been doing, but it doesn't seem like enough at all even though he doesn't seem hungry on that amount. There's a lot of conflicting info on the Internet and it was hard to find the information, so I thought this would be a good place to ask.

Go by the guidelines on the pack.

But also go by the body condition of the pupster, if he seems to be losing weight add a little bit and if seems podgy then reduce a little bit

Ah yeah, sorry, he's eating Wainwright's dry food. It's the large dog breed because it's what the breeder was feeding him, so obviously going by the guidelines (which is 270 grams per day for a 2 month old) is more than required for him. Does 50 grams per meal sound about right? Thanks for all the replies, appreciate it Smile

How does Loki look? Is he thin, podgy or 'chunky'?

Don't get bogged down with the weights of his food. If he's a lively, chunky pup that's growing well, then you're doing it right! thumbs up

The amount to feed would depend on the brand of food you are feeding. They can vary from one to another.

For example we are currently changing Rockys food from first one says (for a 10 -20 k dog) 190 -320g per day
second says '' 140 - 250g per day

We are changing over to the second food. It also depends on the quality of food being fed. With most cheaper brands you will probably notice you need a greater amount than for a better quality brand.

The amounts shown above are from the pack guideline amounts.

Yeah, he is chunky, and he doesn't cry or give any indication that he's hungry, so it seems it's about the right amount, especially given the information that was posted. Thanks for your help, everyone Smile
