Training - so proud!
I am so proud of my other half today.
Benson has been with us 4 weeks today - he's a rescue, a handsome lad, nearly 5 years old, an amputee and a huge personality.
He has learned so much, really taken to his training with the only problem being getting my OH to treat him the same way, train him the same way and be consistent.
But today the OH excelled himself. I had to work for 4 hours and in that time he seems to have succeeded in training Benson to bark continuously at everybody and everything! AAAAAAARGH. I am FUMING!
Everytime I am absent, even for the 4 hours at a time that I work away from the house, he undermines all the progress Benson has made. Recall, dropping a ball, not jumping up, EVERYTHING goes back a step.
Yes, I can - and will - get my lad back on track not least because he's had a tough time and he flippin' well deserves the best I can do (and this forum has been a mine of information and advice from day 1), but it seriously concerns me that it's a constant battle and one I fight alone.
I've explained, asked, begged and even demonstrated, written a list of the commands Benson understands along with hand/body signals, shown off how well he's learning and how good he is when he understands what you want from him, etc etc etc but STILL the OH seems to delight in doing the opposite and then saying Benson's "been a little b0gg0r".
Can we have a special section on here on training humans because I need some help here?
Anyway, I won't go on, if you've read this far, I thank you and apologise for the rambling but I really needed to put pen to paper (so to speak).

Re: Training - so proud!
Believe me, you're not alone! I've got the most pig-ignorant, stroppy, dominant 3 year old EBT, and it's taken me three years to get any sort of control over him - thanks to my oh!
I tell him "this is the way I'm training him to......" and my oh says or does something else & then complains that Dempsey just stared at him with a dim look on his face! Well, ok, he is dim, but an even dimmer look!
Keep plodding on. It will get better & eventually Benson will learn things despite your oh!

Re: Training - so proud!
I was about to suggest how about some training for the other half They can make it all very hard work can't they.
Keep at it, maybe Benson will end up training your OH.

Re: Training - so proud!
That must indeed be very hard. I'm lucky in that we both sit down and discussed training methods and rules before we got Suki and still do so about once a week.

Benson looks gorgeous! Maybe take them both to obedience school? Hehehe, maybe OH needs to go on a long holiday while you solidify training?

Everyone in the home needs to be on the same page with the rules and boundaries. Perhaps arrange for OH at actually take Benson to a training class on those days when you have to be out. Involve him in the ground work and he may see the light.

Let him see how a dog behaves that hasn't had any training. It will then maybe hit home how important it is

Re: Training - so proud!
Thanks for your input chaps. I appreciate you all taking the time
We did discuss in great detail every in and out before committing and I set down very strict but fair and workable groundrules. We all agreed to be consistent and I made it clear it was for Benson's sake as much as (if not more than) ours.
It seems that either
1) he nodded and said all the right things because he'd seen something he wanted and now he's got it he can revert to type
or
2) he's jealous of Benson getting the attention!
It's crazy-making! Our 10 year old gets it so why can't he?
I suggested that she might do a training class with him and she's well up for it - she already has a Young Handler award from when she was 7 and in charge of our Liver Dalmatian
He's a different matter, he doesn't need to because he was brought up with dogs! I was brought up in a house but it doesn't make me a bl00dy builder!!!!
Unfortunately, training wise at least, it's me that will be away for 3 days at the end of July.
I had to smirk this evening - Benson seemed to be trying to do the training - playing in the garden he was waiting for "bring" but kept being told "fetch" and "get" - so he just stood there virtually rolling his eyes. I swear, if he was human he'd have had his hands on his hips saying "am I the only one who's grasped this ?!?!"
Golly I do go on sometimes! Thanks all!

Re: Training - so proud!
I ask your OH one question... would you bring a loaded gun into the house without first having some training in its use or would you be happy if anyone was allowed to drive on the public roads without a lisence? Rules and boundaries are in the interest of a happy and safe home.
