Injured 9 year old sfaffy bitch

Post by holtmini Fri Jun 29 2012, 21:46

hi can anyone help me, i have 2 staffies, millie black bitch 9 (spayed) and alfie white pied dog 8, both are fantastic loving dogs, and there is a but, millie is over excitable when my 2 year old granddaughter visits even though millie has had practically daily contact with her from birth, alfie is fine greets her and will go in the garden with her but then her will go and lie/sit down and be fine his usual self, but millie gets a toy of her own and continually runs round with her pushing into her and getting very exited, we have tried ignoring her behaviour, putting her in another room, disciplining her but nothing has any effect, i need some input please, i dearly love my staffies and need help thanks in advance
ps, we have owned 5 staffies over the last 36 years all from puppies till they passed away so were not novices but a bit stumped :-(

Hi & welcome to the forum.

What a poser. Hmmm. Is she excitable at other times or just with your granddaughter?

she can be silly as all staffs are, but over silly with amelia, as soon as amelia goes home or for a nap or to bed she justdreverts to her normal self and lays down and goes to sleep, if amelia is here foe 6 hours shes running about excited all the time nothing stops her

Sounds like she finds the visits stimulating! I take it she doesn't hurt her at all? Other than knocking into her?

Have you thought about keeping her on a lead while Amelia's with you, or would that restrict her too much?

I would advise a lead as well. Have you tried having her sit and wait patiently before interacting with your grandaughter? The only other thing I could think of is taking her for a good long walk before she comes over

That's maybe a way forward - a long walk or some sort of exercise before your granddaughter arrives might help. Is she treat orientated?

hi thanks for the replies, she loves her treats but not to extent that you can distract her with them Sad maybe the solution is to tire her out first !!! i'll try giving it a go Smile
