Leather Collar causing irritation?
Hi everyone,
My boy Denny has a small amount of irritation on the front of his neck , where his collar sits. I walk him with an EzyDog harness so its not from pulling, could he be allergic to the leather? Its not really been a problem before, and it doesn't seem to be bothering. He was at the emergency vet recently for 3 days straight, on a drip being treated for a people drug overdose (got in to my hockey bag and ingested 14 Voltaren 25 Anti-inflammatory tablets, 4 times overdose!). He lost hair on his chest/neck, bum and near his ears as a result. Is it just the lack of hair causing irritation? If so how do I stimulate its growth? I do remember when I had him on the leather collar before that it did rub some of his hair away, but he's been back on it for a while now and no problems until this.
I prefer the look of the wide leather "staffy collars" but if its causing him a problem I'll switch to nylon. Thoughts? Thanks all

Re: Leather Collar causing irritation?
The loss of hair could be contributing to the irratation. Perhaps just switch to a nylon collar until the hair grows back? Or you could try to condition the leather like a baseball glove to soften it up a bit.

I think that might be the case. The collar is lined on the inside and so is already quite comfortable. I think I'll do what you say and just switch while he recovers. I'll also give him a lot more collar free time.

If you aren't already taking the collar off while he is inside that would be a good start. They can get caught on something and be a potential danger to Denny if he is unsupervised.

He usually always has it off while inside. The last few days I've been ding lots of yard work and he's been outside with me "helping", with his collar on. Could be a factor.

Re: Leather Collar causing irritation?
Could be but I'm sure the hair will grow back fairly quickly and the collar will be worn in so it shouldn't be a long term issue
