sore bum?
Noticed it this morning and now more that im finally home after work... Zeus keeps licking his bum and rubbing it on the carpet.. Im guessing because its itchy and it feels good when he rubs it? I've lifted his tail up and his bum seems to be a little red and possibly sore, what could it be?

Re: sore bum?
Could be that his glands are blocked, a quick trip to see a nurse to squeeze them will sort it, you could do it yourself but

Re: sore bum?
Could be blocked glands, or he might just have a sore bum!
Bathe it in a little warm salty water & rub some sudocrem on it. If it's still the same tomorrow then it's probably the glands.

Hi poor Zeus, ok if he seems too be struggling too go too toilet or has any problems passing, yes it could be blocked glands, but sometimes pups like babies simply get a sore bum imagine how you would feel with all that wet grass round your bum
I just try alittle sudacream apply with a baby wipe if it doesn,t work a quick trip too the vets will put you rmind at rest.

Re: sore bum?
There are videos on Youtube for cleaning anal glands but to be quite honest it should only be undertaken with the full protection of a wet suit and divers helmet
Joking aside your veterinary nurse should be able to do this for you, or rather your dog.

Re: sore bum?
Thanks for your replies everyone. Iv cleaned his bum with salt water and applied sudocrem but he keeps rubbin his bum on the floor again and taking it all off. Ill do it again before i put him to sleep and check on him in the morning, if its still the same then ill definatly take him to the vets. Hes just done a poo, half of it was dark coloured and half was light coloured, and looked very stringy.. Could that mean anything?

Are you up to date with his worming?
If so, he might just have a slightly upset tum which is making his bum itchy. If that's the case he'll get over it quite quikly.

Re: sore bum?
Yep up to date with his worming, he only had his two tablets last week. It could actually be grass, he loves eating the stuff!

Last week? Could be the effects of the wormers - Dempsey's like that about a week after his wormers every time!

Re: sore bum?
I was about to say has he been eating grass
Try and discourage it, its not that good for them as they can't digest it, hence why it could be in his stools.
A grassy bum at such a young age!!

Re: sore bum?
so i took zeus to the vets yesterday and he came to the conclusion that zeus's anal glands are infected and that they were full and swollen at the time. he squeezed them as much as he could but couldn't fully as they were infected and wouldve caused zeus a considerable amount of pain. he gave him an anti inflammatory injection and also prescribed noroclav tablets which i am to give zeus once a day and also loxicom oral which im to put on zeus's food once a day.. lets hope it works!

Re: sore bum?
Get well soon Zeus!
And errm no, I don't clean my dogs' bums, they never need it unless they've been poorly and had the runs, in which case I will if needed.

Re: sore bum?
Just to add my own thoughts, When Polly has been on anti biotics she sometimes gets a sore bum, she gets a kind of intestinal thrush and a couple of days of a tablespoon of live yoghurt 3 times a day clears it up for her very fast.

Re: sore bum?
so apparantly the reason zeus's bum is really sore is because of the new food i put him on - applaws - because its rich in protein, hes having trouble digesting it, leaving his poo to come out soft; which is irritating his bum. the vet suggested i put him back on wainwrights (which he was on before and was ok with) and see how it is. the reason i changed to applaws was because its got more protein and less fillers, but the vet also said that zeus would need to consume some cereal/grain which provides fibre and fluffs his poo up. his anal glands were half full aswell, after being emptied only a week ago! hopefully the food change will sort him out!
