Travel Sick
Hi...The last 3 journeys we have taken our 12 week old pup on she has been sick every time. These journeys have only been about 25 mins long. This is when sitting on my lap and down in the footwell.
has anybody used anything for travel sickness, any recomendations etc?
Thankyou

Re: Travel Sick
The only thing I can recommend for car journeys is the DAP spray, but this is more for a calming effect rather than sickness. Can your vet recommend anything for travel/motion sickness?

Re: Travel Sick
Maybe you're expecting a bit too much, too quickly? Try a few short journey's of about 5 minutes followed by a bit of a leg stretch & breath of fresh air. Then gradually build them up over a few journeys.

i agree with caryll, the first three times we took zeus in the car, he vomited everywhere. we then took him on a few 5 minutes journeys, and i sat in the car with him a few times, even though we didnt drive anywhere, just so he got the feel of the car, and that he knows its nothing to be scared of. at first we used to hold him and sit in the car, but then we put him in the back seat and left him to it.
he now has no problems in the car, if im sitting in the front, ill put him in the back and he'll fall asleep if its a long journey.

Re: Travel Sick
Hi all, We rescued a staffy last October and every journey we've done be it by bus train or car she is sick. My mum gave me a calmeze tablet that she uses for their collie and it worked a charm!
Its about £4 for the box and I only use 1 tablet each journey.
Hope this has helped!
Btw Zeus is GORGEOUS!! Made my heart melt!

Does she shake or anything , or is it just sickness. Tilly's very first few trips made her sick , but after this she got a little worked up in the car and wouldn't calm down , shaking and panting , we found the best was for her to travel with my daughter in her seatbelt in the back and eventually we could do a long journey without a problem, she just needed a cuddle to reassure her . We also used a Thundershirt for her anxiety as well which calmed her a lot, but she doesn't need it now

Re: Travel Sick
We brought her home from nottingham an hour away and she was fine. and we've been out with her in the car before so she is used to car journeys its just been the last 3 times.
She doesnt shake, she seems quite relaxed, she looks around then lays down for a bit. But before she is sick he mouth gets very watery and she salivas everywhere then is sick.
I might try the calmeze, never heard of DAP spray so we might look into that. Thankyou. Hopefully she will get used to it before our week away at the end of July :/

If this is the case do you not think she has just been getting a little too warm in the car, Tilly has been struggling in the car with the heat , if I know we are going somewhere I try and get the car going 15mins before with the windows up and air con on just to make it a little more comfortable for her, once we are going well , then she seems to be quite content to have the back windows down and get a bit of air through though she isn't one of these dogs that likes to travel the whole journey with her head out of the window.
Ella - enlighten us with these Ginger biscuits I am intrigued
My OH just said that pregnant women can take ginger to stop sickness so I suppose it makes sense

Re: Travel Sick
I don't know why it works, but it's the actual ginger that helps dogs, people etc etc with sickness including travel sickness but biscuits or crystallized ginger are the easiest way to give it

Re: Travel Sick
Ginger is excellent for any upset tummy, see if you can get some of these. They would usually be in a healthfood shop:

Re: Travel Sick
My experience with Callie (4 mos now) exactly like Dave's with Tilly. She used to vomit; then she used to drool and shake and whine; then she used to just drool and shake; then she used to be OK only in someone's lap; now she sits quite happily in the back seat. Next step will be a harness...
My kids' school is 1 mile from our house and I tried to take her everytime I was going to drop off or pick up. Lots of little short trips. She really did get progressively better.

Re: Travel Sick
Beau is 12 weeks and gets really sick if she is in the footwell of the passenger seat, I have founds that she is better is she can see out of the window at a seated position - i was guessing that it was kinda like being on a boat - when ur sea sick ur told to look at the land so that was the logic i took! I put Beau on a childs booster seat in the back on her own for a few times and had a passenger in the front as I didnt know if my body heat would be too much for her and I thought by holding on to her I was giving her the impression that the car was something to be scared of!! Beau is much better now in the car and can do longer journeys - i was taking her literally up and the street and back for few days though! Im sure that Sky will improve with time and patience!!
