Bizarre mouth tremors
I have a 1 year old male Staffy. Back around Christmas he out of the blue started doing this weird thing with mouth. All of a sudden his mouth will start moving up and down very rapidly and a little frothy saliva will develop and start to come out of his mouth. It doesn't last very long. Took him to the vet, did research on possible toxic substances, etc... Has anyone else experienced this with there staffy? Any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated!! I have no children, he is my son and i am worried that it may get worse.

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
It does sound a bit odd to me, could it be a compressed nerve ??

Re: Bizarre mouth tremors
I think I know what you are describing, if its the same Blue does it once in a while. Not worked out myself why he does it or what brings it on. Doesn't seem to effect anything, just seems to be some strange thing he has lol
He lasts about 10seconds max. He hasn't done it for a while.

Re: Bizarre mouth tremors
Well Blue is not that far off 3 and he did it a few months back.
Not sure what has brought it on but whatever it is doesn't seem to be anything that bothers him. Doesn't happen that often either so not had much chance to see what may cause it.
He does a sort of fast fish impression but without the pa noise if that makes sense and salavors from crease where the upper lip joins the lower lip

Re: Bizarre mouth tremors
My male does the same thing, your see this mainly in males, but a few females will do this too.
Its their way of tasting something ... ie a bitch in season.
My male will do this each time one of my girls is close to coming into season.
He'll lick where they have piddled and then start chattering his teeth and froth at the mouth slightly.
If they find a smell they want more info on their lick it and start this chattering of the teeth
Plus its not always a bitch in season that will start them doing this.

Re: Bizarre mouth tremors
Interesting..........is there a term for it?
Might be able to you tube a dog doing it so everyone will reconise it if there dog does it.
I thought it might of been cos he was angry.......wife foams at the mouth just before she performs a perfect left hook.

Re: Bizarre mouth tremors
Nice one! does seem to be the same sort of thing Blue does. Blue does it faster and sometimes slobers when doing it but it's the same thing.
Great find.....others can now see it and know its nothing to worry about

Yes, it's "The horny adolescent male dog Syndrome".
I would hazzard a guess that the op's dog is not neutered? All my males have done this once they've reached 'puberty'!! Typical males, they can't just say "That's a nice smell", they have to froth at the mouth like they're rabid & like their chops with a lascivious look in their eyes!

I am starting to notice the women are more clued up on this than the males......starting to think if I did this as a teenager now

Re: Bizarre mouth tremors
Thank you all for your replies, they have really put my mind at ease. I used to cry while he would have, what i thought was some sort of seizure. I was especially relieved to see the you tube video. I have been looking on the internet, trying to find another dog that does the same thing, but was unsuccessful. Thank you all again, I should have done this a long time ago.
