Breed Standard Weight
I always go straight for the animals section in a book shop to check out the dogs and especially staffie books. In EVERY one that I have read, for a full grown dog the weight is set at 17-18Kg, or 38LBS. Hmmmm, seems a bit low to bet as as the standard. There is poll on the site and the majority of votes are for over 21Kg. My guy is 9mnths and at 20Kg. What do you reckon the breed average is? I'm talikng fit healthy normal dogs that are not over fed or unnaturally large.

Re: Breed Standard Weight
we have a alot of show dogs on here, also pet dog, crossbreed and also other breeds
Re: Breed Standard Weight
My boy is 22kg. Judging from pictures of his father and grand fathater both of whom were champion show dogs, Iwould say they were definitely over 18kg. I think what is important is the proportions.

I agree - balance is more important (to me)

I agree. Jusges will be looking at good overall breed 'type'. Staffords are never weighed or height-measured at shows in the UK so an inch over, or 3 or 4 pounds over won't make any difference.

Re: Breed Standard Weight
memphis looks like one of the smallest staffs in my area and he 16.5 ins and 21kg or 42cm and 44lbs

Re: Breed Standard Weight
It's strange, isn't it? It must differ with each area - most of the staffs in my area (and there are a lot of them) are really small!

Re: Breed Standard Weight
same for us too , though I would add Tilly (17kg) is extra small, but go to Stoke and there's some right Tank like dogs and its only 10 miles away

Re: Breed Standard Weight
This forum isn't only for purebred or showbred dogs. Many of the dogs on here aren't papered, some are mix breeds, some are from accidental litters, some are from unethical BYBs and some aren't even Staffords at all. Because of this, I don't think this forum is the best way to gauge the average weight of the breed. It is common for pure bred, pedigreed Staffords to be an inch or two and/or a pound or two above or below the breed standard. Fluctuations of more than a few inches/pounds are not unheard of, but are not common or correct in pure bred dogs. That said, it is true that the proportions are more important than the actual height and weight in this breed (and a few other Bull Breeds).

Re: Breed Standard Weight
Thanks for all the reponses. I get the whole proportion thing, it was just that all the sources say 13-17kg or something along those lines, and yet nearly every male i've come accross has weighed more.
Thanks though...

Re: Breed Standard Weight
The standard for the breed is 36-41cm (14-16") and 13-17kgs (28-38lbs) for a male or 11-15.4 kgs (24-34lbs) for a female. Any dog above that height or weight is above the standard, which may or may not be a fault depending on other factors.

Re: Breed Standard Weight
Troy is 17.3kg on an empty stomach, give or take as he moves around on the scale.
