so he is 10 months old, my parents have started saying he looks bigger than all the other staffs they see around the place , so i measured him and he is 17 inches..he might just be a big boy??, or as i didnt have papers with him-crossed with something ?
dont know if its worth getting some blood tests or not..

My boy is well over standard, seriously, he's a beast. But his grandfather or great grandfather was a presa canario so that's no surprise. I love him to death no matter how big he is or what he's crossed with. You could get tests done, but they are expensive and not at all accurate. There was someone on here a while back who knew her staff was pure but tests showed Jack Russell and something else I think. Its not worth it. You love him, that's all that should matter.

Without papers he will be classed as a cross anyway. I really wouldn't bother with DNA testing as shontelle said it is kinda unreliable.
He looks gorg to me and very much staffy! Xx

Re: hey guys-just measured my dog-look please
Just looks like a big stafford!
17" isn't that tall to be honest. My Bandit was 17" and pedigree, so it's no real indication. A lot of staffords do seem to be being bred smaller nowadays, though.
Bronx is obviously top size, but he won't grow much taller - he'll probably stop his upwards growth in a couple of months. Then he'll start to fill out & become stockier.

He looks good to me. I wouldn't be overly concerned with him being slightly larger than standard unless you are planning on showing and even than he shouldn't get much taller

Re: hey guys-just measured my dog-look please
Put it this way, he isn't a pit bull type until 18 inches, so he is fine lol

Re: hey guys-just measured my dog-look please
I agree with the others he looks good to me. My boy Teddy is 17 inches although a tad over the current standard it isn't significant enough to make people doubt he is a stafford.
Also as Caryll said he is probably not going to grow in height anymore anyway.
I've said it before (a long time ago on this board) but if you have a Labrador that is an inch or two over Standard it's not an issue - he's just a big lad. So it's really sad that breed discrimiation means that with Staffies people get worried. At the end of the day size variation exists - it would be impossible to have all of them within a certain standard. It's like saying all British people have to be within a certain height or they can't be British lol

Re: hey guys-just measured my dog-look please
17" is only an inch above the standard, it is quite possible and relatively common for a dog to deviate an inch or two from the standard. Without papers you have no way of knowing for sure if your dog is a pure bred Stafford or not. The DNA tests are absolutely worthless at the moment. They are not at all accurate and are a complete waste of money.

Re: hey guys-just measured my dog-look please
might sound like a stupid question, but where do you take the height measurement from? and at what sort of age do they stop growing? Lola's nearly two and seems really small compared to some staff's i've seen

14", and around 12kg, so perfectly "normal", if you could ever describe a staffy as such

Take the measurement from the floor to a point level with the highest point of the shoulder (the withers). Lola, being female, will be smaller than males, and is probably the right height compared to the breed standard which says 14" to 16". That would mean that a bitch should be nearer the 14" and a dog would be nearer the 16".

Fully grown about 3 years, but I still notice Moo's muscle developing and she is 3ish!

Height wise they stop growing (usually) at about 12 months old. Lola's taller than most because she's a cross breed - her height will depend very much on what she was crossed with!
