male dogs and social cues help !
Hey
What with the weather being so lovely we took ziggy to the canal in the country yesterday for a good old sniff and explore . We bumped into lots of people and ziggy couldnt get enough of the fuss...flirt !
He also met female dogs , where despite being slightly stiff his tailed wagged and there was nose to nose sniffing and abit of private part sniffing . Howevet he met a male dog , there was the usual nose to nose and tail wags , but ziggy tried to put his pawsbon the other dogs shoulders which resulted in the other dog growling and zig grumbling too , no biting or snapping tho . He has done this before and seems to upset male dogs with this dominance . He is entire till nxt month and has just gone two . We have had him six weeks and at home he leaves toys food and bones when we say leave it . He does put his paws on ur shoulder for hugs and fuss .
Should i be worried about this and keep him away from boys ? Is there anything i can do to stop this other than keeping him away ? as i said in a previous post , in the future we wud like to add a play mate , however it would definately need to be a bitch or does this sound like he wudnt accept any other dog ?
Any help or advice greatly appreciated
Thanks

Re: male dogs and social cues help !
This behaviour is dominance, pure & simple. And it's one of the things that neutering isn't likely to stop, unfortunately. However, training will help. When he meets other dogs don't let him try to climb on top of them - it will always cause problems. If necessary keep him on a lead & correct him if he tries it.
It might be an idea to stop him putting his paws on your shoulders as well, at least untill you can sort out the behaviour with other dogs.

We do keep him on the lead with other dogs to be safe and he has a harness with a loop so we can pull him back if he tries to jump .
So stop him pawing our shoulders when we ccrouch down ?

Id say yes. He should only be allowed to jump up when you invite him to, but he should never do it of his own accord.

Re: male dogs and social cues help !
He will. It's a standard form of dominant behaviour & although some dogs will put up with it, there are some (my own dog included) that will take it as an invitation to a full on fight!

I have spoke to his old owner who gets intouch for updates n he used to do it before . But we will allow him to meet dogs and curb this out . A strong no and not allow him to jump . Ive been invited by his old owner to a staffy club that hes been going to since he was 12 weeks where some of his doggy pals are

Re: male dogs and social cues help !
since we got buster 3 weeks ago we've been working on his doggy socialisation, we are lucky that my parents have 2 labs that they are happy for us to walk with to get him used to it and also lots of dog owners who come in to our pub are also happy for us to try him with there dogs. he always done the same thing jumping either on their shoulders or back, he even tried it on a german sheppard that was so big he ended up on his back . this wk we have seemed to have cracked it strangely by leaving him off his lead, evry dog he's met since being off his lead he's just sniffed and walked on or had quick play and came bac to us.

Romeo is really friendly with everyone, even if they growl at him i think he might be a bit brain dead most days... but romeo does try to mount ALOT of dogs, both male and female, but he doesnt do it to veryone, he normally picks out some individual at the park and harasses them with his humpping. I agree with Caryll, it seems like dominating... i'm not sure with romeo if its hormones or domination... he is kinda at the stage in his life where he has started to notice the ladies
Re: male dogs and social cues help !
Humping bitches may be hormonal, but not necessarily; humping dogs is always dominance.

Agree with Caryll and I'd put a stop to all jumping up unless it's invited

when he was younger he humped everyone, lately it has been mostly bitches. but some times he will try and mount a male, not so often anymore luckily.
Re: male dogs and social cues help !
Buster is bad for jumping onto other dogs. I always tell him to get down, and I do pull him off, or hold him so he can't do it in the first place. The other day when he snapped his collar he ran off to play with a german shepherd. He jumped up her and she told him off (not badly, just a warning). At the time he still carried on playing and running around so I thought he didn't realise what she was doing, however, this morning while on our early walk we saw her again. This time Buster lay on the floor when she came over, untill she had sniffed him, and then tried to play so I presume that he understood that she had told him off before? Or maybe he is a bit calmer with her after she had his whole head in her mouth while they were playing!? Maybe he is slightly more intellegent than I give him credit for?!
