hunting "instincts"
ive seen on here that some dogs occasionally catch wild animals, but am i the only person who's dog appears to have no instinct to chase? where i walk there are hundreds of rabbits, squirrels and other field and woodland animals, but even from ten yards away Lola simply looks at them, then looks at me with an "i dont get it" face.
in fact, the only thing she'd ever tried to get was a duck, which really confused her as it simply flew away...

Re: hunting "instincts"
I think that is a bit odd as most dogs would have an instinct to chase, I guess it is a good thing at least she isnt going to be off chasing everything in the park or the woods

to be fair staffies are not the worst culprits by a long way. rehome yourself a hound mix of unknown parentage that happens to come from working lines and good luck to you. Some German pointer and gun dog breeds are pretty hard to calm down also.

Re: hunting "instincts"
Moo has a very high prey drive. We walk in woods where she can just disapear after deer, squirrels, rabbits, anything that moves really! She has had a few squirrels, deer she can't catch nor rabbits, thankfully!! But do enjoy watching the chase!

Dempsey's had rats & squirrels & gave a cat a good shake once. None of my previous dogs had a very high prey drive though.

Re: hunting "instincts"
Terriers in general tend to have high prey drives, but there are exceptions to every rule. Saxon hasn't caught or killed anything yet, but it may just be because he is almost always on leash and when he's off leash it's in areas where there aren't many critters (the dog park, etc.). He pulls to try and chase pigeons sometimes, but doesn't show much interest in squirrels or outside cats. He also shares his home with two cats and is very gentle with them.

I wish Tyson had no prey drive. Todate he has caught several pigeons, a few rats and, now, while on holiday he is doing his best to add a monkey or two to his tally. Thankfully all he has of that is a snowballs one in hell.
