Re: Group Dog Walks
I would if there were any of you near me! I would have to be careful, though, cause Dempsey is SO dominant he causes trouble a lot of the time!!

Re: Group Dog Walks
Oh, Dempsey likes playing with dogs, that isn't the problem! It's just that they all have to be totally submissive or he pins them to the ground!
He's so far pinned.....
several cross breeds
2 x tibetan terriers
4 or 5 staffies (lost count!)
1 x rottie
2 x GSD's
And probably more I can't remember!
He doesn't bite them, but it's pretty frightening for their owners, and I think he would bite if they growled back.

Re: Group Dog Walks
We organise a group in Spalding lincs that does exactly this, we started it when we got our staffy pup and have a few other staffie owners who join us, I hope you find something similar in your area or even start your own as it is great fun and for us the numbers are never huge, which is a good thing, its nice to talk staffies on a walk and just relax without worrying about comments from other walkers as much. If you do start your own you'll be surprised at the interest you'll get I'm sure and it makes you realise how other staffy owners are looking for the same thing, we just got a simple free website as a reference point to post on although we haven't used it a great deal as FB seems to be preffered choice, then just a simple notice in the local pet shops explaining what you do and contact details and you're away. Even if only one other person joins you then its a result and it grows from there as in our case we're not an official 'club' or anything there's no membership ect ect we just ask everyone who's interested what dates and times are best and organise to meet up from there, so everyone is responsible for themselves by way of insurances ect we haven't had any problems with doggy disputes yet, the great thing though is that everyone is like minded and understanding so if someone had a dog with problems then we could work something out as a group between us. For us we don't claim to be dog experts and its great to meet experienced people and hear their thoughts and views on all things staffy as we walk

Re: Group Dog Walks
Yes that is a great Idea...
Vinnies daddy was going to post of his FB about other owners going for play dates.. when I get my pup and she is ready for short walks or even before just to play I am gettting together with a few doggies for play dates
makes them happy adjusted friends lol.... Titan better get along... he reminds me of Dempsey a little... I dont think Titan knows he is a flippin dog the way my sister treats him... you know he even has a shower in the bathroom.... she turns it on and he steps in and showers for gawds sake!

Re: Group Dog Walks
Wish Dempsey would do that! It's absolute hell trying to get him inside the bathroom, let alone have a shower or bath!

Re: Group Dog Walks
I am lucky as all my mates at work have dogs, so we tend to meet up n our days off etc as and when we can and it helps keep the socialised withoter breeds.

Re: Group Dog Walks
The only time I can really safely let Dempsey enjoy interacting with another dog, is when I'm at work & he can play with my boss's daughter's GSD. They've know each other since they were pups.
Oh, and the GSD is TOTALLY submissive!!!

Re: Group Dog Walks
I tried locally, but there were no takers! I don't think they wanted to walk with a bull terrier!

Re: Group Dog Walks
Ignorance, I'm afraid!
They take one look at him & turn the other way! Have to say, though, I can't always blame them, he's by far the most dominant dog I've ever known & he can be a handful. Nice enough if the other dogs are friendly, but................

Re: Group Dog Walks
Do you correct him when he is dominant?? My Vins was REALLY bad for the paws on back, he still does it sometimes but we are aware of it and sort of catch him before he goes. What do you mean by dominant?? Is it just paws on back, head over back etc??

Re: Group Dog Walks
He is fine as long as the other dog is submissive. He shows very few outward signs of dominance unless the other dog does so first! He'll happily play with no dominant behaviour as long as the other dog shows none.
His main sign is actually staring straight at the other dog. I can distract him & control him no bother, but other people don't like it. It doesn't help when people often call him a pit bull!
He isn't particularly aggressive, though. He has pinned down several dogs over the past year, but although there was noise & lips drawn back, no teeth contact was made with any of them, and he never started it. The only real toussle he's had was actually started by another dog which was off lead & attacked Dempsey from behind. He defended himself very swiftly & I had no chance to avoid the fight that followed, albeit short-lived, and had to rely on experience to seperate the two as the other owner was next to useless.
Not nice.

Oh that is great.. Pets at home.
I enrolled Holly into puppy preschool yesterday so cute she is in a class of 4 puppies for 4 weeks.
The kids are taking her so they learn how to walk her and teach her.
Opps sorry Vinnies MumMel Skora wrote:Yes that is a great Idea...

Re: Group Dog Walks
I would love to start a staffy group walk. I did it with a greyhound group when I had my greyhound and it was brilliant. Quite a sight too cos there were about 30 greyhounds on the walk! We attracted a few stares
