LGV Test Empty LGV Test

Post by StuW Wed May 09 2012, 11:58

Had my LGV re-test yesterday as I failed the first time about 3 weeks ago. First time I had 2 serious faults and 3 minor faults, you're allowed up to 15 minors but no serious! Anyway done my re-test yesterday at 2.30pm and passed with only 2 minor faults Big Grin! Just got to do my 2nd part of my CPC and I'll be good to go to look for work in truck driving Big Grin! I'll be able to drive any rigid truck up to 32 tonnes I'm sure. After the CPC I'll also be classed as a "professional" driver haha, but being male and 21 years old I already class myself as a professional lmao Smile)

Well done!

Those tests aren't easy - my oh is a qualified artic driver & PSV driver. It isn't easy to have a clean sheet at the end of a test - 2 minors are very good!

What were the serious faults last time?

Well done you it's not an easy test to pass thats for sure.

My Dad has been an HGV driver for many many years, he had his own lorry too, but that was years ago now. He is now retired. I even had a go and it myself once, whilst he was in it with me. Great experience and good fun.

I have also driven a JCB whilst supervised. I've not met many other women that have done that.

Btw it does take years to become a professional driver passing the test is just the beginning, you still have lots to learn. Not having a nag but things to just bear in mind. Well done again. thumbs up Laughing

Yeah I've only got 3 and a half years driving experience in a car and then had 5 days training in the truck then test at the end!

One serious was pulling on the handbrake when I wasn't at a complete stop, was doing maybe 2mph but it was making the truck jolt. Second fault was coming up to a set of lights and checked my mirrors, looked back up and the lights were at amber, panicked and tried to stop but was past the "point of no return" which is roughly 1 and a half lines from the junction. (Lines as in the road markings)

My 2 minors yesterday was one for approach speed, he felt I went to slow at a junction/corner and second was putting it in gear and meant to get 4th but was still in the high box and forgot to switch the button down and went into 8th lol! But he said I done miles better than my last one, said it was an enjoyable drive as he had just been out on an artic test and said it was a nightmare lol Smile)!

Thank you Big Grin!

The biggest I had drove before the LGV was a long wheel base van haha! Always wanted to drive a JCB lol.
Yeah I know about the professional driver thing lol, just the fact my mum plays on that as she's been a bus driver for about 10 years so I can use the "professional" part aswell lol Smile)!

Will you be taking it further? Any NVQs in the pipeline?

My oh had to do the first two NVQs for PSV, he didn't have a choice. Passed them both with flying colours, but then he was trained by London Transport & they have a reputation for top class training.

Well done!

I think the second time you are always less nervous anyway cause you know whats going to happen basically.

What are you off to do with it now?

Not heard anything about NVQ's, as far as I'm aware, after I've done the last part of my CPC that's all I need!

Thanks! My mum and uncle have PSV licences. Most people I know that have had tests be it bus, car, motorbike etc have all passed at least 2nd time!

Thank you Big Grin Yeah I was more prepared for it as I knew what was going to happen! 5 safety questions at the start, then do the reversing and then 60-70 minutes driving!
Cant do anything really just now, but if I pass the last part of my CPC then my mum's boss has contacts in a freight company so that's something, but theres other places, TNT, DHL etc! Been out of work since January last year so things are looking up Big Grin!

You could even try job agencies that specialise in LGV, they're always looking for drivers & maybe one of the jobs would suit you as a permanent one.
