Shiney coat?
Buster's coat is quite dull looking. Someone said about adding cod liver oil to his food, but after googling it I'm not sure how much I should give as it says too much is bad for dogs. Does anyone else give it, and if so how much? Or is there something better I can give him?

Re: Shiney coat?
You can add about a teaspoon ful of cod (or salmon) liver oil two or three times a week with no ill effects. However, why not give a small tine of sardines in oil a couple of times a week instead?
Also, a raw egg twice a week can help keep a coat glossy.

I feed him on James' Wellbeloved. I don't know what he was fed on before though, and has only been on this since I've had him. I might try sardines though, thank you His face and legs seem quite glossy, it is just his body that seems very dull, a few people have comented on it too so I know it's not just me! lol

Re: Shiney coat?
You could also try getting a rubber mit with a 'glosser' on the back. The rubber removes dead hairs & stimulates the oil glands, and the glosser gives the coat a nice shine.

Oops. I was giving Troy one capsule of fish oil a day. Is this too much! What problems can it cause?
I'll stop it now then. It seemed to help with his dry skin behind his ears.

Violet was a wee bit under the weather, and i noticed her coat getting a bit dull, but a few tins of sardines and she was back to being nice and shiny again Only downside is her fish breath when she gives you a post-dinner face lick

You can buy pet specific cod liver oil, its very good for their joints when theyre older. It will tell you how many mls to give per kgs

Re: Shiney coat?
my 2 have some omega 3, 6 @ 9 for dogs on their food each day.
It says on the bottle it nutritionally enhances the health of the skin and coat for a brilliant shine. And Jethro ( though he may be a nervous wreck! ) has always had a wonderful coat and no skin problems.

I was told by a nutritionist attached to my vets that too much cod liver oil was bad for a dog. She recommended a couple of teaspoons a wekk, with no more than 4 teaspoons a week. As I wasn't using cod liver oil, I didn't think to ask why!

Re: Shiney coat?
I'll give it 3x a week, they are only small capsules. Probably less than what the vet stated.
By the way, I take it the bones in sardines are not an issue?

Re: Shiney coat?
I have started him on sardines now, only 3 times a week, so hopefully with this and the better quality food his coat will start to get better. I mix these in with his usual food, so he has now decided that his dry biscuits aren't as tastey any more. What other things can I mix in the aren't too expensive to buy? I will try it with an egg mixed in, and last night he had mince meat as I'd cooked too much. Are there any other things?
