Re: JUMPING
Get a smaller staffy!!
Seriously, you might want to try adding a pice od trellis on the top of the fence, but angle it slightly inwards. That way your coiled-spring-on-legs won't find it so easy to grip & get over it!

Re: JUMPING
Hey Staffy Girl,
I can completly understand where you are coming from..
My last staffy could jump and climb over a 7 foot iron fence!.. there was nothing that would keep her from climbing that fence.
I am not sure what the others think about running a peice of electric fence across the top but a friend of mine did it and it worked very well.. their dog soon learnt that it was nicer to stay in the yard
Funny the 2 staffy;s across the road are both happy to wander around in the yard with a 4 foot wire fence they could very easily climb..
but i can assure you once they get a taste for the great out doors they are very hard to stop.

Re: JUMPING
Personally I wouldn't use electric fence. The laws in this country are weird & if someone climbs over your fence & gets a shock, they could probably sue you!!
But I don't like aversion training, anyway, I prefer to keep it positive.

Re: JUMPING
Caryll really?.. Man all we need to do is have it well marked
"electic fence" etc.... if they are dumb enough to climb over it then they are at fault. As long as it is clearly sign posted.
How would you stop a jumping spring loaded pocket rocket?.
I am curious as to what more i could have done to stop her bounding over the fences

You're just plain mean!!!!
Seriously, the trellis, pointing inwards, will do the trick as they won't be able to scale the fence and get to the top edge of the trellis in order to get over it.
I know you can put a sign up saying 'beware electric fence' (we've got one for the razor wire at the church) but I just don't like the idea of electrocuting my dog! I know it's only a mild shock, but if they get shocked & fall backwards awkwardly they could really hurt themselves.

This doesnt have to be perm tho.. my sister in law just rescued a dog GSD x Huski!!! ( not a pretty lad) and she did the tops of the fences like that... I think they just got a roll of chicke wire ... here in australia we sell puppie play pens that are just a roll of course wire 7.5 metres long and you roll it out in a shape and peg it down.
They just cable tied it to the fence and bent it inwards.... it would only take 5 mins to take down as they just have to cut the cacle ties
worth keeping him in when he is such a beautiful boy

Re: JUMPING
Yes, it doesn't have to be permanent, or even very strong - it's just a deterrant. Use cable ties & when you need to take it down, just cut them away.

Re: JUMPING
I think a lot depends on what you do when they're really young. If they are discouraged right from the start, they'll often not bother later on.
When I got Dempsey I was told the danger time would be around 6 - 9 months old. After that, they get so heavy that they can't be bothered with the effort it would take to scale anything taller than 5'!

Re: JUMPING
Does he run and jump or jsut climb if he runs and jumps you could put another fencing 2-3 foot away from the other one so he is clears that one he'll be stuck between the two of them, but he is jsut a climber rather than add more fencing to bend in inwards at a angle bend the fencing you already have at an angle.

Your right its cruel to shock a dog, they just don't understand it and it can really frighten them. My younger bitch zapped herself on my horse's electric fence and wouldn't even go back into the field for a year afterwards
