Large 'bulb' indicative of a male dog about to go crazy?
A friend of a friend took their dog to the vets and queried what the large lumps were on the penis I believe breeders refer to as the 'bulb'..which is what ties two dogs together after mating.
Allegedly the vet advised that the 'bulb' was so big because the dog has never mated at could go crazy at anytime and run off to mate. They recommended it be castrated..
I've noticed Troy has a very large 'bulb' at times lol.
Is there any truth in this? Can it be bigger at different stages of excitement?

Load of old crap.
Sorry to be so blunt, but it really is rubbish. The swelling is purely a dog's excitement & will happen whether there's a bitch around or not - when you come in after you've been away for a while & Troy gets excited to see you, have a quick feel along his shaft & you'll see there's the swelling. It can also happen to a neutered male.
Castration or whether or not a dog has mated makes little or no difference!

Be as blunt as you like
I thought it probably was, cant believe this was suggested. The dog is under 1 year of age too.

Ty gets it all the time and its huge and he was netured at 6 months! I was worried they cut the wrong bits off to start with as it looks like he still has his clangers sometimes! hehe

You'd think a vet would know something like that, wouldn't you?

Like Caryll said, load of crap Harv gets its often through over excitement especially when we get home and he's missed us
I won't be neutering him at all.... especially not through things like this that vets tell you

Agree that what this vet says is a load of crap. Happens to all normal males fixed or not.

Seems even in 'vet school' everyone gets taught that no balls is best. I don't get that at all, there is medical proof that non neutaring is better for the dog's health. Imagine if all human doctors were taught the same! You'd think a vet would know something like that, wouldn't you?
'But i'm not planning to have kids-what difference does it make?'

My mate was seriousley thinking of taking her pup to the vet, she'd been worried for a while as there was no sign of his bits then one night I got a worried text from her saying her dog has four balls lol... she only had females before and had no idea bless her. so her boy had gone from nothing to four, i text her back saying she should use him as a stud. still rib her about it.
That made my eyes water lol

I laugh now but when I was about 11 I got my first boy mouse (only had females before then) and he had such big balls I thought he had a tumour and wanted to take him to the vet! Oh dear.
