Other articles describe the dog as a bulldog and then a pitbull , can't believe the guy left it tied up outside a shop , he knew it had bitten people and said it was a bit like Hannibal Lecter !!

Poor girl. Glad she's ok. She should really have been told not to approach a strange dog though. Mine know not to approach a strange dog unless the owner is there and they ask the owner first. it's just common sense.

Agree with above, should have known better than to approach a strange dog tied up or otherwise.

The article said that she saw someone petting the dog and so she started to pet him, as well. I can see why she would think it was safe to pet a dog that was already being pet by someone else.

As Cesar Millan would say "No Talk, No Touch, No Eye Contact"
I was taught never to go up to a dog that I didn't not known. This was probably due to my mother being attacked when she was a child by a dog she petted, much like this kid has been.
I raised my kids not to pet dogs unless they known them, but kids will be kids at the end of the day and often forget the warnings/rules that they are given.
I hope the kid recovers both physically & mentally from this.
I do think that schools should start to teach young children not to pet strange dogs just like they teach them stranger danger with people.

I was attacked by a dog when I was a kid so would always be very carefully with children approaching a strange dog, I still have a scar on my face from being biten.

The nation just doesnt do enough education about dogs. Most bite cases are of kids playing with dogs too rough or going up to strange dogs. What do they learn in school? How to play with bloomin sand. Think they need to start teaching them not to talk to strangers and take sweets for a life home.

Same except it was my the top of my inside leg, couple of inches to the left and I'd permanently have a squeaky voice Sad
people seem quite good around here and every kid or there parents have always asked before petting.
