attacking smaller dogs
Hi there, im new on here so apologies in advance if im not doing it right!
Me partner and I bought a staffy pup just over a year ago and she was the perfect puppy! She was playing fetch on the second day we had her (my family had always had irish setters which arent renowned for their intelligence to me this was magic!). Everyone who met Nommi fell in love with her (even those who didnt like dogs!). Training was easy as she has always been so eager to please and most the time loads of fuss has been all that is needed. she completely ignores treats when we are out and about!
We have a 5 year old daughter who adores her (possibly a little too much) but Nommi loves her back and will often sleep in her room at nights and loves it when she comes home from school.
We socialised Nommi every single day from the day we got her so she has always been great with other dogs. She has a best friend staff who she really goes all out play fighting with but we give them time out if it seems to be getting too rough.
The problem - (sorry it took so long but i love her and often go on!!) Recently Nommi has attacked a small puppy... it did involve a stick that had been thrown for nommi but people keep saying it is incredibly unusual for dogs to attack puppies! the puppy is well now and we paid the vet bill but now we cant trust her around smaller dogs and puppies and make sure she is on the lead around them. Dogs her own size or bigger than her she seems to have no problem with!
Has anyone else had this problem or is it unusual?? She has been bitten (although not badly) by small dogs twice before this happened so i didnt know if this might have had something to do with it...
Any advice or even feeling like we not alone would be greatly appreciated! Will get a pic up on here asap too

Re: attacking smaller dogs
if she was attack by smaller dog that will be why she doesn't like smaller dogs all you can do is getting her back on the lead while smaller dogs are around

Re: attacking smaller dogs
fair enough. its just a shame because she has always been so good of the lead , sitting before roads and recall is excellent. Is it worth keeping her on the lead and doing short greetings with passing small (on lead) dogs or do you think now it has happened once that is it?

Re: attacking smaller dogs
and do you think we need to worry about her if she has her own puppies as i have been told (not sure if its true or not) that they should sense if its a puppy and it is unusual for them to actually hurt a pup...

Re: attacking smaller dogs
is she KC and fit the staffy stanard? if not i wouldn't breed from her there are far to many staffy in rescue at the moment
Re: attacking smaller dogs
only one of her parents was KC registered so she is not but she is pure staff and vet thinks she a good example. We have a list of friends that have wanted her puppys since she was a pup and have watched her grow up and who we know well and can give them good homes. Also we want to carry her on as she is an amazing dog. It wont be happening for another year or so yet though and we will be getting her screened for any health issues etc first. We are not doing it for profit and wont do it if she doesnt pass the screening or there are any problems.

Re: attacking smaller dogs
Her getting bit may be why she is aggressive. Best to keep her on lead to avoid any other incidents

Re: attacking smaller dogs
Agree with above best kept on lead if shown signs of aggresion to other dogs.

Re: attacking smaller dogs
Hello and welcome to the forum from me and Billy.
Billy is the same he hates small dogs and puppies. Think he is a it of a bully, we always keep him on lead as we have had one or two mishaps. He was well socialised from the day we got him. So the only advise is to keep her on the lead always.

Re: attacking smaller dogs
same here, my dog was attacked by the small and hairy brigade and now the small dogs are the only ones I worry about. just think ahead and put her on leash to avoid confrontation.
in terms of breeding, no dog comes trained and socialised so the credit for her being good must go to you. Her behaviour is no guarantee for the puppies soundness so I'd suggest to your friend to adopt if they can or buy from a good breeder.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Your dog sounds wonderful apart from the issue with puppies.

Re: attacking smaller dogs
Ok,,, like most people on here i have a staffordshire bull terrier too!
mine is a male english staffy, black - brindle and white! (Diesel is the name)
He to had a problem with attacking small animals or dogs smaller than him!
i came to the realisation of his enviroment and space and how that affected him. meaning..
he didnt have a big back yard, he couldnt go out he front often, and there was smaller dogs all around him that was able to do what they wanted. i also thought about his daily rutine and his general personality and nature.
after actually attacking my friends smaller dog, it was decided that something needed to be done immediatly.
so because i wasn't planning to move house for atleast another 2 years i enrolled in dog traing classes.
i went to a place called alpha dog training! this place was great its not just about teaching the dog but also the owner. this place taught me things i never would know about!
your dog might just need some more enfourcment/training or guidance.
