Re: SBT group at cruffs
The staff got through to the group was a real corker! Lovely dog.
I've got to say, though, that I was quite disappointed by the quality of the staffs there this year. So many of them had no real substance to them.

What's up with people breeding staffies that looks like pugs? Crossguns i'm looking at you. I'd like to see a bit more meat on some of them as well. Alfie is gorgeous though.

Re: SBT group at cruffs
I'm not too fussed about the size of the head or the short muzzles - they are fads that will change over time. They have always cyhanged back & forth over the years & they will again. I just think that far too many of the staffs I saw today were too lightweight. I don't mean 'terrier type' I mean totally lacking in body 'substance'. Their heads are huge, but their bodies are whip thin & light on bone. A staff should have great strength for their size, it's actually part of the wording in the standard, and although the staffs I saw were well muscled they didn't look any stronger than, say, a jack russell!

COMPLETELY agree. Couldn't have put it better myself. They were muscled its true, but its more stripped back muscle then anything, there's nothing built up there or bulked out-and I don't mean for a dog to be overweight but I've always thought the weight standard for staffords is too light anyway. I think my boy is twice what its supposed to be and he's only a small guy.I just think that far too many of the staffs I saw today were too lightweight. I can't imagine any of those dogs jumping on me and accidentally punching me in the stomach and completely winding me so I topple over! (Which is what Romeo did the other day! )

Re: SBT group at cruffs
Agree 100% with whats being said here about the little dogs, I actualy replyed to another thread about this and more or less got put in my place that I was wrong and they are the "standard" ,but to me this new pug dog style staffys arent real staffys at all. The one that got through was stunning though, really nice dog, but that black (brindle) one that was against it wasnt my cup of tea at all, in standard or not.

Yes, it did! He was one of the better ones - a good size, with plenty of round bone & substance. Every inch a staff!

Not by me! It isn't the height that bothers me, it's the lack of substance & good, solid bone.

Yeah agree totally, its not the height at all, its the build, and the muzzle looks too short on them, or maybe thats more down to the size of the rest of the dog? not entirely sure, but to me they dont look right at all.

Re: SBT group at cruffs
Good solid bone is hard to come by now with all that damn'd inbreeding.
Junior is so inbred it hurts for me to look at his papers. We're only lucky the only signs of his inbreeding are his dodgy premolars and weird tummy =/

Take a look at the winner's pedigree - there's inbreeding two generations back & beyond!

Wasn't saying there wasn't.
I'm just stating that I'm getting frustrated that "breeders" these days, can't seem to breed without messing up a breed whatsoever =/ It's worrying. I should know, I has an inbred. A cute, adorable, mildly fluffy, prize winning inbred but Ju-bear still is a product of greed and ego.

Re: SBT group at cruffs
It's happening less nowadays, but there's still the thought in the show world that breeding a half brother/half sister is ok.
To me, it's lack of knowledge of genetics (a must if you're going to breed!), lack of imagination or just plain laziness! So many people can't be bothered to do a bit of in depth research before they mate their bitch.

Amen...listen to this. But to create a "good staffy", Junior owners bred him to his half-sister, who for security reasons, I'm going call R.
I have SHOCKED at what came out, I've only ever seen one of the pups, but he looks WEIRD, his back is arched for one and he's very leggy, which his parents are not...and the back, is from Junior, I know that for a fact...it's horrid to see. And his owners reported his stomach is very dodgy...so yeah =/ Lack of imagination = suffering for sure here.
I'm glad he's neutered now. I would have done it myself. He's a good dog, but not breedable.

Re: SBT group at cruffs
I'm still shocked that line-breeding goes on and people think its okay because 'its not like breeding a human.' Perhaps not mentally for the dog but genetically its not good at all, inbreeding causes genetic diseases and makes a dog more subseptable to allergies. If you look back into some dogs pedigrees its shocking to see the same dogs cropping up again and again-the staffy is a very healthy sound breed for a pedigree but if this continues I can see it becoming as ailment prone as some of the toy breeds.

Re: SBT group at cruffs
Without comment about inbreeding/linebreeding I must agree with Caryll about the staffs on show. To me its not about height but about proportion. A well proportioned staffy is a joy to see. Muscled and strong.
