Dear Mrs Hutton
Thank you for contacting us regarding our Bakers Complete range. As a responsible pet food manufacturer, the health and well being of pets is our primary consideration.
Bakers contains small amounts of colours to redress the natural variations in colour which arise from heat processing. We only use colours which are licensed and legally approved for animal food, specifically cats and dogs.
Bakers also contains preservatives and antioxidants which are used to ensure the product remains in good condition during storage by delaying the onset of staling and preventing the growth of micro organisms, for example, mould. Fats are particularly prone to oxidation leading to rancidity and ultimately spoilage of the product. As with the other additives, their use within Bakers is only at the minimum level required and within legal limits.
We would like to reassure you that all pet food has to be made to human food standards and the additives contained can also be found in human food. Please be assured that we strictly adhere to the legislation that governs what can and cannot be used in pet food (The Animal Feed Regulations 2010 , Animal By-Products (Enforcment) Regulations 2011 and many more). These regulations lay down the categories and levels of additives permitted in pet foods. The EU authorises additives on the grounds of safety, technical need and efficacy. The authorisation process is rigorous. If they were considered harmful they would not be added. Food additives are regularly and independently reviewed and if research raises scientifically substantiated concerns about a food additive, permission for its use in pet food is withdrawn.
Bakers is formulated to meet all of a dog’s nutritional requirements and is a 100% complete and balanced dog food. Like all Purina products, it is produced in line with the FEDIAF (European Pet Food Industry Federation) Nutrition Guidelines and the NRC Guidelines (National Research Council). These guidelines detail the nutritional requirements of dogs and cats at varying life stages and are independently peer-reviewed by pet nutrition experts.
For further information on pet food ingredients and the legislation governing their use, we would suggest visiting the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association website on the following link www.pfma.org.uk or telephoning them on 0207 379 9009.
We always welcome feedback, both positive and critical and please be assured we have forwarded your comments to the Bakers Brand Team for their information.
We hope that we have gone some way to reassure you regarding Bakers Complete and if we can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Just because it's OK for us to eat does not necessarily mean it is OK for a dog's consumption.
Oh well at least you got a reply.

Hmmm. There are various colours etc that cause hyperactivity in children, but they are legal - that doesn't make them good!
At least they've replied, but it's a load of hogwash!

"human food standards" :-< some human foods are lethal for dogs, so that argument doesn't mean much to me.

Eugh, Bakers. I have serious issues with this brand of 'food', and always recommend to anyone that is feeding their dogs on it to switch asap. But as the others have said, at least they replied. Many others wouldn't have bothered knowing that if you don't buy their food, there are plenty that will.
