Sad Behaviour whilst out

Post by kirsty1680 Sat Feb 11 2012, 20:25

Hi all
I have rescued a staffy four weeks ago and she is driving me mad when I go out!
We leave her in the kitchen on her bed as she is not crate trained. I always leave her toys, blankets and a filled kong with her.
However whenever we leave her she wrecks the place! She has chewed the door frames, she can open our doors so we took the handle off! She can also open the fridge so we have to empty that each time we go out otherwise she clears all the food! We have to remove the bin otherwise she knocks it over and eats the contents, she open the cupboard doors and eats all the food etc in there!
This morning I tried putting a few treats around the kitchen (in the places it is ok for her to go) in the hope it would keep her busy but she wasn't interested in them and went to the fridge again!
Any advice would be gratfully received
Thanks

Crate train ASAP! How old is she?

If you can;t get a crate staight away, baby gate. Just until you have her trained, for her saftey as much as anything Xx

Hi, there are some experienced ppl on here that no doubt will give you some great advice. In the meantime, I’m online and I feel like typing!! Big Grin Her behaviour could be the reason why she found herself in need of rescue recently. Unfortunately young staffies are full of beans and being so instinctive, they can be a little bit frustrating if not properly taught. I could well be wrong but It sounds to me like separation anxiety and although there are a few ways to deal with this, you main ingredient has to be patience.

If my diagnosis is right, you need to get her to calm down, leave the room, wait outside until she goes crazy when you come back, and while ignoring her stay until she calms down again. Repeat until she’ll know you’ll return and not need to chew through everything. It could take a long time so my advice is to invest some time when you actually have it so that you don’t get frustrated.

Btw, a couple of bricks will keep your bin upright but you could well come home to find your dog stuck in the bin!!

sorry this made me chuckle if the dog was stuck in the bin at leas the rest would be safe. Laughing no seriously i agree that you need to get a crate. I have never used them but hen I have never had a dog like you have.

A crate is a good option. We tried going out in increasing intervals. We would leave for 10 minutes and then 20 and so on and give her lots of fuss if she was good when we got back
