staff's in ireland
Hey there i am the new owner of a beautiful 8wk old staff and he is jus class...his name is vegas. My question is does he need to muzzeled when out in public? I know this may be a stupid question but im met with nothing but neggative comments since i got him. I have a one year old girl and am basicly being told im been a irresponsilbe parent by getin a staff. Ive been told they are on the dangerous dog list by the woman dat grooms my mums maltase...an no1 seems to ave a gud word on them. Ive told how much research ive done into the breed and explained everyting but seems to ave fallen on deaf ears. Im in the republic of ireland and wondering is it the case ere or is it jus ignorant people who jus listen to the media? Ive not read anywhere bout the muzzel or being on dangerous dog list..i know they need to be on the lead but sure so should every dog! all response greatly appreciated....tanx

Re: staff's in ireland
hello vagas and welcome! I think people are just being ignorant to be honest! im having my first staffy in 2 weeks and ive had all that "dangerous dog" rubbish off of alot of people.
I too like you have a child but he is 4 years old. My best friend bred the dog im getting and her staffy is wonderful around children new born or 13! And her staffy doesnt need to be muzzled at all, she never had or never will muzzle her staffy as she a well behaved dog and she has trained her right!
If youve done your research and you know about them then theres no need to worry! They have loving temprament and are loving family dogs i hope ive helped you out a bit, as i dont have my staffy yet but judging from toher staffys iev met i think you sound a responsable dog owner

Hi and welcome from Rocky and me.
As far as I am aware the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not on the Dangerous Dog list in Rep. of Ireland. He does not need to be muzzled when in public unless the court has told you so.

Re: staff's in ireland
no, you dont, they are not on the DD list. and its bloody nonsense. ever notice that the people who bad mouth them have never owned one, only brainlessly tag along with the media. Romeo hasnt been raised with children, and yet, he's a perfect angel around them, even when they pull and poke him he just sighs and puts up with it. they are not called the nanny dog for no reason.
all these dangerous staffs, you never hear about what kind of history the dogs has had or how it was being treated at the time they attack.

Re: staff's in ireland
Hi & welcome to the forum.
Now then. Hmmmm. I've just been doing a bit of googling & I came across this, taken from http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/environment/animal_welfare_and_control/control_of_dogs.html
Rules relating to certain breeds of dog
The Control of Dogs Regulations 1998 (S.I. No. 442 of 1998) impose additional rules in relation to the following breeds (and strains/cross-breeds) of dog:
American pit bull terrier
English bull terrier
Staffordshire bull terrier
Bull mastiff
Dobermann pinscher
German shepherd (Alsatian)
Rhodesian ridgeback
Rottweiler
Japanese akita
Japanese tosa
Bandog
The rules state that:
These dogs (or strains and crosses of them) must be kept on a short strong lead by a person over 16 years who is capable of controlling them
These dogs (or strains and crosses of them) must be muzzled whenever they are in a public place
These dogs (or strains and crosses of them) must wear a collar bearing the name and address of their owner at all times.
The rules on muzzling and leashing do not apply to dogs used by the GardaĆ, the Dublin Harbour Police, State Airport Police and bona fide rescue teams in rescue operations. The rules on muzzling do not apply to guide dogs for the blind.
Now, I don't know how old that information is, and I must admit that I've never heard of it before, even by members here who are in Eire. If I were you, I'd give your local council a ring & check up on the current laws.

actually Caryll is right. better safe then sorry i guess. i still stand by my last comment though about how people react to these types of dogs
Re: staff's in ireland
Sorry I assumed N/Ireland ... still, what ignorant idiot would say an 8wk old pup should be muzzled!! .. and even if they mean when its older, why, so there random breed thats off the lead can have a pop at it and not deffend itself or its owner !!
Sorry, I'll put my soap box back under the table now

Re: staff's in ireland
Just been looking at this again and found the link below:
EIRE Vistors to the Eire who intend to stay for less than thirty days are not required to get a dog licenec those who stay over thirty days are. In addition, there are a number of breeds that are required to be under strict control in the Republic of Ireland. These are Bandogs, American Pit Bull Terriers, Bulldogs, Bull Mastiffs, Doberman Pinschers, English Bull Terriers, German Shepherd (Alsatians), Japanese Akitas, Japanese Tosas, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rottweilers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers including any other strain or cross or every breed or type of dog so described
It is necessary to have these dogs controlled by a sufficiently strong chain or leash not more than one metre in length and by a person over the age of 16 years of age who is capable of controlling the dog,
Further these dogs must be muzzled while in a public place, These dogs must also have collars which identify the dog and give an address. with thanks to the ISPCA for this information link to site ISPCA

Not sure if this just applies to visitors to Eire or not though.
