Cutting nails.
Do you cut your dogs nails yourself (if needed) ? Is it a precise job where you need to be careful where you cut ? Monty has split one of his nails, and the nail on the top that's come away from the bottom seems to have grown very long and starting to curl, but I'm worried about cutting it, as if it's anything like my parrots nails, you need to be careful how far you cut so you don't hit a blood line .. or something.

What about getting a Pedi Paws filer?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1/280-6172892-1265748?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=pedi+paws&x=15&y=14
I use clippers and the pedi paws. I take a small amount off with the clippers & then round the claws off with the file.

We cut Suki's nails and yes you have to be carefull of the bloodline (not sure of the proper name). With Suki it's easy because she has clear nails but we wouldn't do it if her nails were dark.

Thanks guys, I think I can just cut it up to the length of the nail underneath. I'm scared.

Re: Cutting nails.
Hate doing it ... Max has some pale claws and some dark, and hates you touching his feet .... as said, you do have to be VERY carefull, think of it like your own nails, your ok with the white bits, but stay away from the pink bits (not easy with dark claws, a file is best if unsure I think) ... hope it goes well

Re: Cutting nails.
I should also add we only cut two or three at a time and usually when she is resting. She isn't fond of the idea but will tolerate it for a bit

Re: Cutting nails.
Whenever Rocky has needed it doing we take him to a training school that has a dog grooming facility. They charge a nominal fee (£4.00 ) for the process.
I was thinking of looking at how to this myself though, may well have a look at some of those videos. Thanks for the tip.

Re: Cutting nails.
I've never cut their nails, they ware down from all the walks they take me on. I sneak up on them while they are asleep and cut their dew claws if they look long. Hate cutting the parrots claws , always scared they move .

I've never had to cut any of my previous dogs' claws, but Dempsey's just don't seem to get worn down! I guess they're just too hard!

Re: Cutting nails.
I cut the nails on his hind feet, at least now in winter when everything is covered in snow. He mostly manages the front feet himself: http://www.shirleychong.com/keepers/nailfile.html
Re: Cutting nails.
Lottie had long nails on her dew claws and we didnt want to upset her with another trip to be messed about by the vet so i bought some clippers. white nails are easy cos you can see the pink wick so you just clip below that line but darker ones arent as easy so i would just clip the piint off
