how much did you pay for your dog?

I have just been watching a documentary about dogs in the UK, followed by one about dogs in the USA. and the prices that these people pay for their dogs seems so.... tiny, compared to what you need to pay to have an animal here in finland. I know in my home country that it cost 200$ to adopt a dog from our local shelter, no idea about anywhere else in Australia. but here in Finland it will rip holes in your pocket to buy a dog.
Romeo cost me... for just him, not his registration, not his vaccinations or chipping, kennel club fees ect, for just him he cost 1500€. i dont regret it at all. his breeder is a wonderful woman and we signed a great contract, she screened me REALLY well before allowing me to have a puppy. but what about you guys. what does it cost in your country to get a staffie?

Here in Japan they go for about $1200 and are not very common.

yeah i dont see too many staffies, but there was 80 at the big dog show last december...but they probally came from other parts of the country... finlands kinda tiny. its just that while i was watching these films they were mentioning that they went for like... 50 pounds..., thats like.... sad. a dogs life should not cost as much as your food shopping bill.

If dogs were more expensive there might be less irresponsible owners. But with the overpopulation problems in most countries if they were more expensive there would be alot of good people that couldn't afford to have a dog. Kind of a Catch 22

There's no easy answer. The best thing you can do is try to educate people on the issues.

I paid £250 for Bandit, but that was a looong time ago! That was quite a lot then (1981?), but he had very good breeding.

I paid £900 for Dempsey, but he's an EBT, so they tend to be more pricey (for a pup from fully health tested parents), and he had a lot of champions in his background including two top stud dogs for the breed.

If the responsible breeders put the price up, the irresponsible ones would put the price down & breed even more. Catch 22 indeed.

and in the end its the dogs that suffer. yeah romeo has.. really nice breeding. but its all the same, even if he was a mix breed, he's still wonderful. but i dont support back yard breeding so i brought from a registered breeder. and just simply, there are NO staffies or pits in shelters in finalnd, it just doesnt happen. and because i'm not a citizen, i have an A type visa, meaning i live here for life anyway, but you need to be a citizen to adpot. Romeo is the most spoilt dog i know.
my friend has flat coated retrivers, and that cost 1000€ each. and in finlnad, no such thing as a dog that lives out side, cant in -20. they would be pupsicals but i was just so stunned that a pit of staffie had such little value to buy in some places.

Violet was a wee bargain basement dog, and didn't cost us very much at all (well, she costs us a lot to feed and care for, but her initial cost was low!). Both her parents are pure staff, but the owners just wanted to cover the costs of the vets, and to get mama dog spayed and to make sure the pups had decent homes. We still email and text back and forth with the breeder, and she likes to check up on Violet.

To be honest, you could probably get a staffy for free, just by looking in the local ads. We saw a load of dogs that were 'free to a good home', but we weren't sure, as it would be our first staff, if we were the right people to take on a dog that we didn't know anything about. When we looked at rescuing a dog from the cat&dog home, it was around the £100 mark I think.

I paid $1000 for Jimi. The SBTCV recommends a price of around $900 regardless of colour. I was happy to pay the $1000 for him. On the other hand some breeders are asking up to $2500 for blue Staffords.....

Most of the rescue centres charge to cover their running costs, and I certainly wouldn't begrudge them that.

i was just going to say Caryll, when i first started thinking of getting a dog i was going to get a bull terrier mini. i spoke to many breeders in finland and hey all reached the 2500€ mark. i nearly fainted when they told me. but now i have my loveable romeo. so, to me, romeo was cheap in comparacent.
My brothers dstaffie Jack came from a shelter as a wee puppy, he cost us 200$AUD which is a steal is you ask me, and like Caryll just said, they desirve the money to help other dogs.
It really does seem to matter what country you come from and how avalible they are. clearly in the uk, your avrage non showing staff is a dime a dozen, and over here its like buying buckets of gold.

I was going to rescue a Stafford but I wanted an entire male and you can't get them like that, which is understandable.

I paid £150 for lexi as she wasnt show quality (overbite). Her siblings were £200 and £250

My old boy was a rescue, so we only paid £80 for him because he had injuries we needed to have a vet look at i.e his tail had to be docked (we didnt have to pay for castration etc we had vouches from the dogs home when we collected him).
Vinnie cost £300 with papers and skye cost £200 in the end, she was £360 but i made the owner lower the price because he hadnt vaccinate or wormed/flead any of them! idiot! :@

I paid $800 AUD dollars for Jack from legit staffy breeders. He also came with papers too.

Jack's sisters on the other hand were $1,000 each. I think generally the females cost more.

I rehomed Ty from my OHs mate they got Ty at 8 weeks and by 14 weeks they decided they had enough of him chewing and peeing and were going to get him put to sleep so me being me told them I would have him they charged me £30 that was what they paid for his first needles. I have been offered dogs in the street for free whilst walking Ty its horrible when you say no thanks but then think about whats gonna happen to it now because you didnt take it.

There is an absolutely gorgeous blue staff from a breeder (last one of the litter) on my FB page and they have dropped the price $500 AUD, so I thought "Oh, that can't be too bad then" till I saw that the going price was still $2000 AUD

When we got Izzy two years ago, I think the going price for females was between $800-$1500 from the reputable registered breeders. Blues were over $1500 from memory.

3 weeks last spring camped out in a layby to rescue a dog bless em.

Rommel was £800 but then he's a blue and they do seem to go for more money. But, he is KC registered and is also from fully health tested parents and has multiple champions in his pedigree so we didn't begrudge paying that for him.

But as others have said you can get even registered staffs for free if you check out places such as Gumtree ..... does make you wonder what sort of homes these poor dogs are going to end up in.

£500 and he is worth every penny.
Thats an extraordinary amount for a staffy with no papers but it was extremely hard in my local area to find a short legged red staffy. All the other red dogs I saw were pitbull types.
His parents were lookers too.
I must just add that his parents were health tested and he was vaccinated, wormed etc and raised on jwb puppy feed. He didn't have papers because apparently his dads' mother was from Belgium.
I must say after doing some research he does look a lot like a certain belgium bloodline but that might just be wistful thinking!

Dora was £250. She was from a litter of eleven, only four were girls. The boys were £200. She doesn't have papers. Not sure they managed to sell all the boys tbh. Hope they all went to good homes

Paid about $450 for Tyson which included all his initial innocculations, Registration and micro-chipping. the breeder delivered him to me from 700km away. This seems to be a reasonable price to pay here for a Staffy from good stock with papers. I dont mind the price and would be suspicious of one offered for less. (I did correspond with the breeder before hand and spoke on the phone at lenght as I wanted my pup to come from a home type situation and not a puppy mill. I also phoned references she had provided.

Pilot my blue staff cost me 300 with peds which i dont bother about and my staff cross Bauer cost me 500...

I paid $1800 US for Monte (plus flying) but he was already CH. and trained, so I can't complain. Frosty was a rescue through the breeder I got Monte from so I just paid his vet bills and flew him out West.

I didn't get Saxon from a breeder, I got him from a family that didn't want him any more for $150 for him, his kennel, his toys, his left over food, and his grooming supplies. They said they paid $800 for him from the breeder, they didn't get his pedigree or anything with him. I don't think it was a very reputable breeder, but I'm glad he bred Saxon's litter.

Olly cos t£90 inc peds from Brysons shelter a really fantastic place we had home checks etc they really care about where the dog /cat /horse etc is going and they neuter all their dogs and cats

my Lemmy god was a bargain basement also he cost us £50 cos they were going on holiday and thought all the pups would be gone by then so didnt make arrangements for them. Lottie was £100 from the rescue but even though they only charge enough for costs it cost £125 to have Lemmy "done" so can you imagine how much a female would cost. the rescue doesnt charge enough. i know they have donations but we would have paid a bit more i mean whats the price of a life

we paid $800 AUD for Russell. It was probably a lot more than i have found available from what you call a back yard breeder. we couldnt afford anything over that price and all the reg breeders we looked at were through the roof and none had the brindle colour.
but we did our research and Russ's breeders had both parents with papers (no papers for Russ but we could request them and pay for them) both parents health checked and all pups vaccinated and wormed.
only thing I was a bit meh with was the food they weaned the pups onto, I don't think it was great quality but all in all I was happy with the price and the breeding.

most BYB staffs in my area are around $150-$300 (I travelled to Melbourne for Russell)

also, we were looking at blues to start and all of them were $1500-$2500 and still seem to be even though when I look on the trading post blues seem to be the most common staffys for sale now! I would assume the price would decrease the more common they become

kasidy and Sisko cost me £200 each, my 15yr old lurcher Tasha cost £25 from a rescue .My first dog Brekke was a black great dane who cost me £500 in 1980 and this included flying him up to Scotland from Birmingham.

oh man... even in dollers 1500$ doesnt seem bad. paying inpounds and euros is murder. like i said.. romeo cost me a small fortune, and then i think i could have picked up a needy staff in australia for free. but i would never regret shelling out like... two months of pay for my baby

we paid $500 bc the owner of the mother is a friend. She sold the others for $800. Backyard breeder, bitch full staffy (no papers, but both her parents have papers), father full staffy. Unfortunately they're planning to breed from the mother again, and also from one of the female pups they kept. I just think it's so wrong

we paid £100 for marley, he was 7 months old when we got him. he's not got papers but both his parents live just up the road and are both staffs. we got him from my sister in law, she was moving and already had another dog but didn't want him to leave the family and we had already said that if she had decided to get rid of him let us know. she just never had time for a puppy, she has ocd and her son has mild autism

The rescue I work at have a mandatory neuter/spay policy and are all done b4 leaving except puppies which return at the correct age to be neutered.
They charge £125.00 per dog adopted from them and sometimes that dosent even cover vet bills if the dog has been poorly let alone kennel fees etc.

My babies I did not pay for but having spoken to breeders and going through DNA testing to find Tilli's history i have been told that to replace each of my dogs I would be looking between £350 and £900 for each dog due to their pedigrees if I wanted the same quality.

Having seen so many notices of pups for sale here in the UK I have seen prices from £180 (no paoers no jabs etc- back yarders) right up tp £1500 for certaiin puppies.

Mental pricing I know but you see why the back yarders think dogs are money makers and it saddens and sickens me dearly.

My oh paid £900 for hooch just over 5 years ago now, he is kc reg and from health tested parents. he dosnt regret spending all that money he got hooch after all but i know he wouldnt spend it again if he were too get another puppy.

Stanlie was my little clarence puppy as i call him i paid £150 for him she was asking for £175 for him but she knocked it down too £150,over 3 years ago, even for a blue the women could have charged more for him even thou he is not kc reg nor were his parents health tested.
i dont regret buying him what so ever but if i were too get another puppy i would deffinantly make sure it was kc reg and health tested but would not pay more than £500 ive seen many staffy pups from fab lines etc for this amount.

Tara i think her adoption fee was around £80-£90 not quite sure this was 10 years ago.

$2300 , 3 years ago . but you can never be sure how your pup will turn out.
yeah i think it was too much , sure hes got the awesome pedigree and lines , but whoopee.
i bought franki to show him . as franki grew he developed a drwaf toe meaning his small toe didnt fully develop.
i got right up the breeder , i said i carnt show him with that and she said theres champs with the same condition,
i wanted to swap the pup or get a refund etc , but when i bought him i signed a contract stating all pups are sold as pets and no garentee. no refounds. now franki has a luxating patella which has sorted healed but when he trots you can notice it . so no chance of showing him or breeding him which is ashame because he does have some great qualities. i dont think paying heaps of dosh for a pet is worth it , but oh well we love him

..that is the thing ..free or thousands of dollars we love them all just the same
