2 Staffys, options?
Hi
I have a staffy bitch who is 9 months old and wanted to get another, could anyone advise if there is a preference in sex, ie 2 makes, 2 females or one of each?
And is it wise to get 2 or only keep 1?

Ive got two males myself, that way you dont get a problem when a bitch comes in to season, but seeing you have got a bitch i would get another bitch and hope they get on ok....

Re: 2 Staffys, options?
it depend on your dog if there any DA then it wouldn't be wise to get another but normaly female and male will go well together but you would get one or both done.
Re: 2 Staffys, options?
everybody got differnt views i had the male 1st then i got a female because a lot of people told me about its a no no with two males. it all depends of the dogs because every dog is different. i dont look back of getting zena they are like brother and sister. just be warned if you get a female get the male done 1st or both because i didnt and i had a hard three weeks when zena came in season

Personally I would adore another. I would go for a male and poss younger than Moo, she is 3. Def a rescue, and watch them adore each other!
And I wake up!!
Never had 2, time/money/space! One day Xx

Re: 2 Staffys, options?
I was advised by a lady who runs the North West Staffy Rescue when I was looking into a playmate for Tilly, and is also a breeder. Ideally 1 of each sex , but if you can't do this then go with another bitch and keep your fingers crossed (2 girls are thought to be a better combination than 2 boys. Ideally they should have a minimum of a 3 year age gap and if you have boy and girl then BOTH should be de sexed as if the boy has lost his doo dahs and the girl comes into season it will still send him mental but he will obviously not be able to do anything about it. The last bit of advice from her was NEVER leave them alone together for long periods no matter how good they go together.

females can be worse than boys, but it depend on the dogs i would never leave 2 staffy boys or female alone together.
Re: 2 Staffys, options?
a male and female should be good with each other but you will have to get one or the other done so you wont get any unwanted litters
Re: 2 Staffys, options?
I think more problems arise with two females if there is also a male. i had a bitch and a dog that were about 7 when i got lexi and lexi and the bitch would fight now and then. lexi got on with my friends bitch, but not her dog at ALL.
if you rescue just take your dog to the centre, some dogs dont get on no matter what the sex.

Re: 2 Staffys, options?
i added skye to mine when vinnie was just over 9months .. he was castrated already so that wasnt a worry .. it was on the edge of your seat stuff for first week or so while they adjusted to each other i.e eyes on them all the time because vinnie always wanted to play rough but skye was only 8wks and was too little, but after they adjusted they were fine they are like brother and sister now so close!
male and female worked for me and i know of people with more than one of the same sex that worked so it just depends on your situation and dogs i think

Re: 2 Staffys, options?
I think it all depends on your dog. I personally have two males that adore eachother, but that doesn't always happen. Convention is that opposites with one or both being fixed has the highest probability of working without fighting. That doesn't mean it is always true, but less of a potential. I would say another breed that gets on well is any of the bully breeds as these guys can play pretty rough and something smaller or less powerful might have a rougher go.

Excellent advice!

If a staff isn't dog aggressive, then any breed will be ok, but it's usually better if you choose a breed that can match the strength of the staff - they play hard!!

Re: 2 Staffys, options?
Thanks for all the advice I have spoken with a few people and I think best action is to take mine along to meet, she is not aggressive and never has been to any dog or human, so have my fingers crossed.
Re: 2 Staffys, options?
I recommend you wait till your girls a little bit older and had her season and get her spayed, then get a male.
Males and females get along a lot better then single sex pairs. Females can be awful bullies. Two males will seemily get along fine but then have a blow up out of nowhere which is likely to end in death. Of course people do keep single sex pairs, it can be done but you have to be very cautious. I know personally my boy who hasn't got a brutal bone in his body wouldn't tolerate another male in the house unless it was a toy breed as he ignores them.
Generally staffies will get along with any breed, although may play too rough for small or delicate breeds. Staffies and other bull breeds seem to understand each other better then say gundog or hound breeds. Other terriers can sometimes be too 'busy' for them.
If you wanted another breed other then a staffy then a good fit may be an (english) bull terrier, victorian bulldog, american bulldog and rottweiler. But again i would recommed these dogs were the opposite sex.

One for each sex, I believe will be better that 2 of same sex, and if have 2 then they can play together and no stay along when you are out of house.

Re: 2 Staffys, options?
We have 2 neutered males stan will be 4 in july and hooch 6 in october also a female collie x who will be 12 in march. The boys have lived together for a year n 4 months and we have never had any issues with them tara moved in 4 months ago again we havnt had any issues.
I think it all depends on the dogs tbh, our 3 utterly adore ech other esp the boys they are like brothers and you always catch them stuggling up too each other.
I think your best option if you are going too rescue is too take bella too meet the dog and see how they get along.

Murphy was 7 when we had Madge a 3 month rescue, both neutered and no problems at all. My daughter had two boys and had to give one away eventually - they were unsafe together.
