Introduction from Wales
Hi all,
I have just adopted a bluey/grey/brindley female staff cross. Sounds a bit of a mix, but she is beautiful. She's two years old and I've got her from our local council dog pound.
She is very excitable at the moment, which I suppose is to be expected, and I must admit that last night, as she was pacing around at three in the morning having not slept at all, I thought maybe I'd made a mistake.
But my wife reassured me this morning, and I realise she needs time to settle in.
I have had a staff before, and she was fabulous too. But that was a while ago so I suppose I need to get back into the swing of things.
However, I think I'm going to be coming here quite often for advice!!
I've got three kids and she is brilliant with them, she's so affectionate, sometimes it can get a bit much!
I've got a muzzle for her, although I'm not using it all the time, just when there are non family members around, as I need to be able to trust her first.
Well that's my intro done. She poo'd on my door mat last night and wee'd on it this morning, so not a great start but again, I will be looking to get advice on those sort of thing from these forums.
Thanks.

Hi & welcome. She sounds a real livewire!
Is there a reason you're using a muzzle, or is it just a precaution?

Purely as a precaution. Just need to get to know her a little first.

Re: Introduction from Wales
Personally I wouldn't, unless she's given you cause to worry. If she's ok with everyone at home, including the kids, there's no reason why she shouldn't be ok with guests. If you're at all concerned, I'd be more inclined to put her on a lead when people come in & see how she reacts.
A lot of aggressive dogs know that they can't do anything with a muzzle on & so don't try, so it can be very misleading. As she is such a newcomer to your family as well, it could make her anxious.

OK, thanks, I'll bear that in mind. She hasn't shown any reason why she would need one so far

Re: Introduction from Wales
Hi and welcome from us in Johannesburg. She sounds like a grand addition to your family. At least she is consistent where she did her toilet. Maybe replace the mat with wee pads until she is settled in and goes where she is supposed to.

Hello and welcome from another welsh member! She is lovely, but I definately agree with Caryll in not muzzling her. Just keep an eye on her and she should be fine. Was she assessed in the dog's home before you had her?

The dog's home didn't really want me to atke her at all because of the young children in the house. However, she's demonstrated over the weekend that she is very well behaved around children. We had six kids sleeping at our house on Saturday night, and she was as good as gold. Didn't use the muzzle. That's £12 down the drain!!
