Any advice Blake again
Okay guys Sunday night hubby said Blake had a lump on his side, had a look and noticed he had a number on his front leg.... Within half an hour his whole body was covered.. Advice from emergency vet was give him a 4mg Piriton tablet and see how he goes..... Monday morning he looked terrible, and as the day went on he got worse rang my normal vet and an appointment was made for last night at 5pm, by 2pm yesterday his entire face had swollen up so bad that he could not open his eyes, took him to the vet yesterday afternoon. The vet give him what she described as a potent steroid injection straight into his muscle, and prescribed piriton 4mg daily...... She said to expect improvement in 24 hours, and to take him back after 48hours if not cleared up....
Tonight his eye swelling has reduced, however he is still completely covered in lumps and he seems to be getting redder.... What can cause this?
His food is the same
He has nothing out of the normal
He and Chloe a walked the same route as normal due to bad weather
Not changed washing powder or anything
Not used bleaches or detergents near the dogs
Guys this is really bad, vet said its a serious and extreme reaction, what can I do, any advice?
Here's some pics of him....
Blake how he looks normally
his head
his back
His head
This is really distressing him ( and me ) any idea's guys

Re: Any advice Blake again
Oh no! I would be distressed as well. He certainly is having a bad reaction to something! I'd try going to a super bland food or a fast for 24 hours and seeing if he is allergic to any of the food he is eating. He may have just developed it as he is still pretty young (I recall...).

Re: Any advice Blake again
Poor Blake! It definitely looks like an allergic reaction. Could he have been bitten by something, or rubbed against something?

Re: Any advice Blake again
Not sure if he's been bitten on a walk or while pottering in the garden, there's not many insects about in this weather though maybe mosquito. Not rubbed against anything that I know of

Re: Any advice Blake again
Trouble is, we've had such mild weather this winter that some insects are still around, but very sluggish, so there's more chance of being stung. Believe it or not, a few days ago I saw a honey bee.
Bee stings will often cause bad swelling at the point of sting, but will also cause lumps & swelling all over the body, and being that Blake is white, his skin is probably more prone to an allergic reaction than a darker dog.
I know this is from an american site, but does this look like what Blake has...

Thank-you for that Caryll... Just had a look at that website, and yes it seems to be the same sort of thing....
Vet gave the same sort of treatment they are talking about steroid/Piriton etc, was also advised to keep Piriton on hand in future...
Been told if not completely cleared by tomorrow he needs to go back for a second steroid jab which has a 48 hour life.... Poor lad

Re: Any advice Blake again
At least you took him to the vets quickly. The steroid jab will help to calm everything down & the piriton will slow his body from producing histamine.
Poor little fella, it's just one thing after another.

Re: Any advice Blake again
It's took the swelling away from his eyes and face, but he's still very bumpy LOL..
Think the worry yesterday afternoon was his eyes, just couldn't cope with him struggling to see along with his deafness

He is, think he's a little sleepy with the Piriton... He is a little distressed with the itching I think....
Think he will need that second jab though this is him now, it's been 28 hours since his jab

Re: Any advice Blake again
Poor guy. It cold be a reaction to a sting or a food allergy. While they are still young their allergies can change as they mature.
We took Suki to a dermatologist and she was allergic to most everything. We experimented with for food for a few months and finally setteled on a kangaroo and sweet potato dry food.

Got no idea what caused this.... One thing he did have on Sunday afternoon that he never had was half of a slice of garlic sausage, daughter gave him a bit while she was making a sandwich ( since been banned, the sausage not the daughter lol ). Just hope its a bee/insect sting and nothing around the home

Re: Any advice Blake again
Daisy has looked like this previously. turned out hers was an allergy of some sort, unable to afford testing to figure out what it exactly was, the one thing we had changed was a we fed her a treat she never had before. the vet told us to give her beneadryl cool bath, lots of love, and boiled chicken and rice for meals. It's very tough to go through. hope he feels better soon

Re: Any advice Blake again
Had his second jab earlier today so he's very quiet... His swelling has gone down a lot, but still lumpy...
if he is still showing any symptoms after 48 hours the vet says we need to go down a different road as the steroid is too potent for long term use, they don't like to give it to puppies more than once..
Just have to hope he's back to normal on Friday. Thanks for your responses to this guys, it's appreciated

My brother looks like that if he gets near strawberries and i've reacted to a few plants over my years as a gardener but usually during the summer when things are soft and growing.

Re: Any advice Blake again
Hi sue,
The lumps on his head..my bruno had early last year but being dark you could only feel them i started worrying incase they was small tumours, so i had him straight up the vets, he was put on piriton and antibiotics and they carmed down but still rise abit when the warm weather comes but i had all the same questions as you did about cleaning agents etc.
Lovely to hear though he's back to normal more or less and his usual self
