Terrible news...
So apparently a neighbors cat got into my yard today while the boys were out playing. Frosty got ahold of it and it was killed. Don't really know what to do! I knew he has prey drive, but didn't think he would get anything. I know it sounds terrible. Just wasn't wanting to make enemies of the neighbors really. Think they found a weak portion in the fence because they popped through the fence where the neighbors dog (who likes to fence fight) is located and that is where I found my dog hiding from the dead cat who made it over as well.

Re: Terrible news...
Of course nobody is there. Left a message on their phone to call me. Hope it wasn't theirs because then I won't have to confess to anybody. I have not seen the cat before and no collar or anything was on it.

Re: Terrible news...
It is somones cat, but there really isn't any legal issues that we are going to have to face (if it isn't the backyard neighbor's cat, I'm not going to tell anybody). We will rehome our cat though because we don't want him getting hurt. Thanks for the comfort. I may not tell anybody even given this. It was really gross cleaning up the dead cat. Lost my appitite for sure.

Re: Terrible news...
That is terrible news. I've never had one get a cat before. Our old Bulldog was raised with them and we don't let Suki anywhere near a cat.

We have to watch for cats in the garden if Chance is out as i'm 99% sure that if he managed to catch one he would kill, he always been just to slow thankfully so far

Re: Terrible news...
Max never comes into contact with any cats either, which is a good thing cus they simply wouldnt get away from him !!! he is so fast ... he can catch rabbits on an open field just by running them down and can out manouvre them aswell ... luckily tho he just lets them go

That's what I was thinking. I may just tell the neighbors their dog has been fence fighting with mine and there are some boards to replace. I didn't actually see what happened so it isn't lying.

Re: Terrible news...
if it was anyobdy cat i would tell them but you dont want to start a war with your neighbours.
Re: Terrible news...
oh * how sad , i think i would keep my mouth shut too.
Only thing to me would be if it is someones cat they will be looking for it woundering whats happened and i personally if it was my cat would rather know than be worrying what had happened it.
Mine love our cat but hate my ohs mums cat because her cat is a nasty bugger given the chance i think they would do the same to a cat they dont like.

Re: Terrible news...
If the animal was killed on your property then there are no legal issues. The cat shouldnt have been on your property. You can only be legally implacated if your dog got out of your yard and went into the neighbours yard and killed it, and even then i dont think it would be that much, maybe a fine and a lead and muzzle restriction.
Could it have been the neighbours dog that got it though? I know most people probably say their animal wont kill their own cats but i know they will for mine has killed two!

Re: Terrible news...
also if it isnt your neighbours cat i would maybe post a flyer in the local shop saying that a cat of the description was found dead at the side of the road, a little white lie...

Re: Terrible news...
if no one saw i dont think i woudl say anything either. it is terrible but cats are usualy too fast and the dogs never get them. my word cant imagine how you must feel. what a thing to happen so soon after him coming to live with you too. really dont know what to say. you must be shocked.

Re: Terrible news...
I feel very sorry for the poor cat, not a nice end. Feel sad for the owner too if its a family pet, but that is life and dogs and cats do not mix well as a rule. Its animal instinct pure and simple.
You must feel awful that this has happened, I know I would if my dog did the same thing. But you can't change what has happened and your first reaction must be to protect your dog and keep the peace with your neighbour, so if it were me I would keep quiet too. At least sleep on it before deciding what you want to do and wait until you are not feeling so upset.

Re: Terrible news...
Well, I spoke with the neighbor just now. It was their cat but she was old and had been living outdoors only for the past 3 years and they knew she wandered so even though they were sad, they say they have no hard fealings. I told them the basics: my dogs were in my yard playing. Their cat came over. Their cat did not make it. Also told them that I found a weak board where their dog likes to fense fight and that I had boarded it up and planned to put another side up on mine to keep them from being able to get to eachother. I even offered to get rid of the body for them. I think they have had enough trama. Glad I could ease their mind but they really were more sorry that I had to deal with it than anything else.

I honestly don't know but mine had blood on it and scratches so I am pretty sure mine did the deed. Could have been theirs though. Probably will never know for sure. I do know that I need to find a new home for my cat or he might be next. So far he has been hiding in the kid's rooms where we don't let the dogs go, but all it would take is one mistake and we would have another dead kitty. It is one thing when it is someone elses, but another when it is your own pet. I am not that attached to our cat anyhow. Kinda co-exist more than anything else.

Re: Terrible news...
Oh Ben what an awful thing to have to deal with. I would not blame Frosty since (if it was him) he only did what dogs do.
Glad the neighbours were congenial about it and I think it is wise that you do rehome your cat especially with the two boys now forming a pack. They will band together against the kitty.
Tyson is ok with my cats but he was introduced as a puppy and it was made clear that they were not prey. Does not stop him trying for a game with them though. He does try and 'get' strange cats though when we pass any on our walks. In fact he gets a little nuts.

Re: Terrible news...
so sorry you had to go through that iv no doubt in my mind memphis would have done the same as he is not a fan of cats in fact he has come close to getting one a couple of times now so i need to keep a close eye on him when he is in the garden

Re: Terrible news...
Poor cat, but that's what dogs do, I'm afraid. I know that Dempsey would kill a cat given half a chance. He's already managed to grab one by the neck & give it a good shaking. The cat scratched him, though, and it got away. Mind you, it's a nasty cat - goes for anything & everything, even people walking past its garden!
Pleased that the owners were ok about it - sad, obviously, but it's one of those things.

Re: Terrible news...
So sorry to read that you went through this, horrible situation all round. Its good that the neighbours were understanding about it. My 2 are mostly ok with the cats we have but Millie has a couple of times chased and grabbed the older one. She let go pretty much as soon as her mouth touched it. She hates any cats she has seen outside and does try to go after them. It's in no way anyones fault, cats wander and many dogs have a high prey drive. I hope your feeling a bit better today.

Yeah living on a farm yard i have went through about 20 cats! Two that were killed, one was given away for keeping on coming in the house and refusing to leave it and the rest just ran away so i don't form attatchments really. The one i have now though i am attached to, but i have had him for 9 years now and he has never went away and hates being in the house! Hes purrfect Lexi broke his elbow when he was younger so he walks with a limp its very cute.

Re: Terrible news...
something like this happened to me too once. i was house siiting for my uncel and his staff bitch Gypsie. I went to the store and when i came back i saw something while laying in the back yard. I'd been told she liked to kill birds if she could catch them and then bury them in the flower pots. so i went to go pick ot up and bin it... but when i got closer i noticed it had fur. i thought crap she killed a cat, got even closer, realised it was my neighbours chihuahua. i had to go and tell the family what had happened. that their dog had some how gotten into my yard and that it had been killed... it was very awkward. and then the woman yelled at me that if she ever saw the dog out of the yard she would kill it and that if it went near her children she would kill it, she was kind of a what the brittish call a chevv, but in her defence... my dog had just killed hers.
Its good that your neighbours were understanding about ther inccident but still tragic for the poor cat.
