Vlad
Okay, Vlad is now 6 months old. He has always been a fairly active and hyper puppy but alway quite good. Now he seems to be thinking of ANYTHING naughty and acting on it! I am thinking that he is going through the teenage phase. He's pushed a couple of boundaries over the last couple of weeks, but the last few days... PHEW... he's not just pushing them, he's putting them in his quite big mouth and chewing them to pieces! He is still very loving and he ran in last night and jumped on the husband (who was asleep on the lounge) for a big cuddle and in the mornings we still have cuddles before I go to work... He's getting lots of walks, being played with in the back yard... LOTS of attention! He begins his training again soon and will be going to obedience classes soon too. We still do his basic training 3 times a day.

Re: Vlad
Could very well be the teenage phase. You are on the right track though. As long as you stick to the training and everyone in the house is consistant he will be fine.

Re: Vlad
Teenagers! Know everything, listen to nothing & nobody understands them!
I know, I've got two human ones! Dempsey has now grown out of his teenage stage (thank God) but there were times when I could quite easily have throttled him!
He will grow out of it, and as long as you keep up the training it shouldn't last too long.

Sometimes we wished we'd called him something like Fluffy, or an equally "cute" name LOL...

Fluffy?? You can't call a staff Fluffy! Where would his street cred be?

Re: Vlad
LOL. We wanted to give him a "cool" name that not many dogs would have... He's super friendly and loving... his breeders said he was "The Little Impaler" because he was the nipper out of his brothers and sisters and they think we named him well! He struts now! He has some attitude Maybe we should have called him John (Travolta)

Re: Vlad
Well, this is an indication of his naughtiness lately: We're up to bed number 5. The last one died a couple of nights ago after I had gone to bed and my husband was still up watching television. He thought Vlad was asleep until he heard grunting and saw him balling up his bed and get a bit frisky with it... and while he was doing this he apparently started biting the bed and ripping it! My husband said there was green fluff everywhere! That bed is now in the skip and Vlad is sleeping on a blanket until tomorrow when I have a day off and can buy him a new one... Naughty Vlad!

Just saw the pictures you put up of Ty and Dog. I truly believe Vlad will never be that calm! And I wish him and Dita would get along like Ty and Dog. Vlad comes in and jumps up for a cuddle but he is just all excited and doesn't calm down until he launches himself into his crate to chew on his pork stick then sleep. We've decided to put a sheet on the lounge. I wasn't going to let Vlad up on it until he had learnt to be a bit calmer, but I just want him to cuddle with us... so we will trial it! He is just so super active!

Re: Vlad
Okay... Vlad was a nightmare this morning! He was jumping all over me while I was trying to fill his water bowl before I went to work and I tried to walk away and ignore it, but he was so persistent! He can actually jump nearly as high as I am tall, and if I am being totally honest, I was a bit intimidated. He wasn't biting, or being vicious, he was just being stupid. My husband is working night shifts this week and because we only have one car and I can't drive, I have to leave for work a bit earlier as have to use public transport. My husband took him for a walk (they have been shorter lately due to the heat over the last few days) and that calmed him down so when I arrived home and went out to see him and then later to give him his dinner, he was lovely! He came in tonight all lovely and we sat on the floor and had big cuddles. And he went straight into his crate for the night! He shows he knows how to behave, it's just not as frequent as he is naughty!

Re: Vlad
Oh... and because he was in a naughty mood today he dug a trench about 4 foot long at the back of the yard and because the neighbours behind us had been watering their garden and it watered ours too... Vlad was COVERED in mud! My poor husband who was quite tired and just got up to check on him and give him a fuss and have a little play, was trying to clean him! We are taking him to a professional groomer on Friday! His little white patch still has a tinge of brown because he kept running off on the husband while he was trying to clean him!!!! He then had to fill in Vlad's trench!

Re: Vlad
We try so hard to make sure he's not bored and is always active and we give him lots of attention... but the last couple of weeks... ohhh boy, he does test the patience a bit! We just don't want to fail him! He gets walked, played with, cuddles, fussed has SOOOOOOOOOO many toys that sometimes you would mistake our back yard for dog amusement park! He's up to bed number 6 as well

Re: Vlad
lemmy gets that like that at times. we just have to be firm with him and let him know its not acceptable and to behave himself. i feel mean sometimes but if we didnt get hard on him he would just get out of control. to them this behaviour is fun but they have to learn it isnt fun to us. put him out of the room if he gets too much and doesnt listen when you tell him. lemmy takes himself off now when we start telling them off cos he is used to getting thrown out of the room. he walks out of the room and gets in his bed and sulks for 10 minutes. suits me fine at least when he comes back he is calmer

Re: Vlad
Thanks I feel really mean telling him off! He's eaten bed number 6 over the last couple of days and we can kind of say almost 7 because the liner (it's a super comfy... and slightly pricey!) that we put into to line the crate now has a hole in it that magically appeared last night Because evenings are his time with us (normally, the husband on does a few nights each month) if he gets naughty, he goes straight outside. And I feel terrible! But we want him to associate being with us inside is relax and chill time and play time and fun is for outside! He has chew toys in his crate and he has a pork chew before sleep (it's kind of like a baby getting a bottle before bed LOL). Looking at your gorgeous dogs, Julie, I can't imagine them misbehaving! Vlad knows the word bed it is funny watching my husband trying to get him (because Vlad is super quick) to take him outside and he bolts straight into his crate LOL.

Re: Vlad
I think Vlad is pushing the boundaries to the limit to test you both. Maybe he's a little ratty with your hubby on "Night" and he's acting up more than normal.
Izzy was really good at 6 months, she started the really "naughty craze" around 10 months and didn't stop for almost another 10 months.
We have not put another mattress in their Kennel (it has a carpet mat in there) as the last one (approx 4 months ago) has a corner chewed and the foam missing. It came back inside then.
The weird thing is she always settled as soon as she came inside and other than shredding tissues and pulling the thread out of the mat about the size a 50c coin when she was really young, she's never destroyed things in the house.
She was obviously bored last week and chewed the end off the reticulation hose again. >

Re: Vlad
Ty is going on 16 months now and I can say that his behaviour is very much calmer than when he was at that age. You just have to give him firm boundaries and let him know when you find his behaviour unacceptable.

Re: Vlad
I was just about to say today was a better day, then I looked out the window to see him digging a rotten big hole However, before bed and this morning, he was beautiful and cuddly! He doesn't like to cuddle for too long, just enough that he knows he's loved then that's it, he wants to cause havoc and destruction!

Re: Vlad
LOL, the problem I have is... some things he does I can't help but laugh at. He is naughty but in a cheeky way. My brother was here today (he has a staffy x blue heeler) with his partner and my 5 year old niece, and Vlad was BRILLIANT. He ran around the yard with her, and my brother played with him and said he is still just playing like a puppy... after a few minutes he settled down, came over to me and sat by my feet for a pat and a fuss! He does know the rules, he just likes to demolish them sometimes

Re: Vlad
Right... We took The Vlad to professional groomers yesterday and told them to do whatever was needed. He is a nightmare for us to wash (any tips would be awesome!) The groomers were amazing. His claws were fine, but due to his digging antics of late, he was in need of a BIG bath! He was put in their hydro bath and was a naughty wilful boy! He jumped around everywhere... the poor groomers were drenched! He was lovely afterward. His white patch is gleaming and he is so soft and shiny! We opted out of the drying, because we didn't want to stress him out too much... but he was very naughty! Lucky he behaved so gorgeously before and after. letting everyone adore him and tell him how gorgeous his is and how lovely his temperament is. There was a little dog in a crate waiting to be groomed and Vlad went up to say hello, but the little dog didn't want to be friends and started growling, barking and baring his teeth... Vlad, the big strong staffy dropped into a submissive position. The groomer (she is also a dog trainer) said he has a lovely nature he is just head strong... as we well know LOL. He did his puppy training with her and we will continue one-on-one because she is awesome with him! But for now, he still likes his cuddles, is soft shiny and smells lovely, but is still very very naughty!

Re: Vlad
I like hearing about Vlad cos he is very similar in age to Dora - she will be six months on Tuesday. I'm really dreading her teenage phase - it hasn't quite kicked in yet but I get the feeling it will very soon.
Sounds like Vlad is being quite naughty! Good luck with his training.
Let's hope we get to the other side of the teenage phase with our sanity intact

Re: Vlad
hmmmmmm... teenage phase. I could think of many other words for it... none of them I can say on here! He ate bed number 7 the other night. He's full of the naughtiness lately. It's such a pain because he really is such a cuddly little (getting bigger by the day) thing, especially of a night before he goes to bed!

Re: Vlad
lol my gosh bed number 7 gone! ok I hope you're not buying those $30 dog beds every time, it's hard to find a good one cheaper. Russell has never wrecked any bed but when we picked him up from our friends after our month away his bed from his kennel smelt like urine... not sure if it was his or their dogs... anyway, we opted not to wash it but to buy a new one, and I found a small babies mattress at the op shop for $3, fits great in the kennel! he loves it!
I'd suggest op shopping it while vlad is in this naughty stage! such a waste of money otherwise unless you're loaded I spose haha.

Re: Vlad
I agree with Meg about the op shops.. I got an awesome cot doona with gum nut babies cover for $5..easy to wash ..and both the boys sleep on bunny rugs and sheets from the op shop...when they get too ratty you can chuck them out and not feel guilty. On wash day at our place though the boys have more washing on the line than we do !!

Re: Vlad
We've pulled the stuffing out of bed 7 and have filled it with old blankets Silly little bugger is finding it frustrating trying to tear this one up lol! He is so sweet, though! He came in tonight and we did our regular thing: He runs around this end of the house, tries to get into the laundry because he thinks the cat might have left him something tasty, he runs and bangs on the puppy gate because he knows Dite is on the other side and he wants to play, he them jumps up on the lounges and then, FINALLY it's time for a cuddle, a pork chew and he then runs into his crate to sleep for the night! He love routine, hates it when it's broken. But, I'm not fooled by his beautiful eyes (they really do make my heart melt!) because I know that he's really thinking "Mum thinks I look adorable right now, but wait until tomorrow! I reckon I'll dig a new hole and start ripping the bark off another tree "
