Oh guys .. Monty has a bad gum ! : ( Empty Oh guys .. Monty has a bad gum ! : (

Post by Guest Wed Jan 04 2012, 19:26

I got him up for the toilet this morning, and for a split second I thought his snout was swollen, I dismissed it and put it down to my sleepy eyes.

My mum text me today to say she thinks Monty may have an abcess, he didn't com out of his bed until 10 this morning !! She assured me he has been playful, eaten and drank well today .. I've come home now and I feel so sad ! See the pics below.

The only thing I can think of, he was licking the inside of a Muller Yoghurt (left overs) pot last night, and he ripped it to shreds, so the sides were quite sharp, and he has cought his gum. I don't know whether to see if it heals over night, or take him up the vet where they'll charhe me god knows what ! He won't let me touch his snout.

Ouch, if it was me I would go to the vets as soon as they open in the morning if it hasn't calmed down, if he is eating and drinking now. Poor lad Xx

Poor Monty that must be sore!

I have a Mullerlite Yoghurt every day after lunch and Harry just loves to lick out the pot, its 'muzzle size', but he shreds them afterwards too so I will have to be careful in future.

Get well soon Monty

That's great that you've got insurance! i haven't had to claim our pet insurance (touch wood!), but I'm glad we have it, as I wouldn't like to have to pay up for vets fee's if anything ever happened to Violet Sad I would hate to have to make the decision over whether you can afford treatment, or if you have to let your pet go without Sad

Hopefully Montys gums are looking a bit better soon, although he doesn't really look too bothered as he's posing for his photos there! Smile

Well I only insured him tonight after coming home and seeing his poor wee snout. I've been meaning to do it for the past few days, this won't cover him anyway as it's within the 14days of taking out the policy, but it takes something like that to pull my finger out !

Yep, but at least he is covered now. Smile

If it hasn't gone down a bit by the morning, my dad will have to pop him up the vet while I'm in work. I don't care how much it costs, as long as he is ok.

Definitely vets. That's too swollen to let it go naturally. You could try to bathe it with a salt water solution, but I doubt that it would do much good other than to make him thirsty!

Yeah I did think of the salt water but thought the same consequence of him being thirsty, he has already peed on the floor twice ! He is going up first thing in the morning. Stupid bloody Yogurt Pot !

We've just had another little look, his teeth are due to come through and where the sore / blood blister is, that's where his tooth will come through ..

Thats probably whats going on his gum infection from the new teeth pushing through dont worry if its that he will be fine when his teeth are through Sad

I still wouldn't leave it - the swelling is far too large to be just a teething problem. If it's an abcess then it could affect the way the new tooth comes through, or could even rot the new tooth if left.

Hopefully it's just that. He's fast asleep curled into me now. Not sure how I'm gonna move him so I can get into bed lol. He's sleeping on the sore as well, so I'm thinking it can't be that painful...although he has got an awful lot of slobber on that side too!

Yes he needs to see a vet it does look like a abcess so he will need antibiotics to clear it up unless he will let you clean it once its opened up the swelling will go and he will feel loads better depends what you are comfortable with your vet may pop it first then give you antibiotics Smile

I'm the same as you though with insurance. Never had it with my last dog and he ended up with hypothyroidism so cost a fair bit to keep. Luckily the oh insured Tinkerbell the day we got her so we have peace of mind.

I will do Karen. We have a parrot and he isn't insured, my mum says 'he's worth whatever cost if he is ill', but as Monty is my responsibility I wouldn't ever want to be a burden to my parents should he ever, god forbid, go through any major treatment. Our parrot had to have 2 emergency calcium injections when we had him, costing just over £200 quid!

It was exactly the same when I had my sheepdog. He was my first dog and I didn't really know about insurance then. Was living with my parents still, and he was my responsibility except for food which my mam bought. I was only 17 then. My job in the co-op during my gap year paid for his vaccinations, neutering etc and to begin with blood tests and thyroxine tablets I paid for. But then I went to uni and my mam paid it each month because I was skint. I hate to think how much we paid out for that, but he was more than worth it.

Tinkerbell is insured though and I feel so much better knowing if we ever hit a problem with her we have that to fall back on!

Hi Lynne,

I'm in work today 8-6, my dad is taking him up this morning when they open, so I'm going to phone home soon to make sure he has phoned them to check they can see him. Me nor Monty barely had any sleep last night. He slept for a bit, I checked his gum around 2am and it seemed to get a bit more blue, swelling hasn't gone down and he's feeling really sorry for himself ! His mouth has weeped quite a alot over night as I could see the stains he left on my quilt this morning.

All done. The vet vet said if its not gone down by Saturday morning to take him back up and he may have to have surgery, but the vet knew straight away what it was before opening his mouth. They said he sees this all the time when puppies are brought in. He had 2 injections, loads of blood came out of it when he popped it and also said there was Poison in there. The teeth that are coming through, one of them is pushing his tooth down which has caused bacteria to slip and cause the abcess. He gave Monty a full check out and the results were a very healthy dog, eyes, coat, body all tip top. Cost = £78 : ) I just hope he is much better by Saturday morning, don't want him to have surgery!
