Trick Thread
Anyone else interested in teaching tricks?
I'm planning to teach Gummi a few useful tricks before school starts in January.
Wiping paws and filing nails
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2aVnSadq58&
You can read more about the nail file thing here: http://www.shirleychong.com/keepers/nailfile.html I loved the idea to teach wiping the paws, though, so will do that first and then nail file like in the video. I'm thinking I'll use the door mat for wiping, rather than a towel. That way I shouldn't have to keep it in place for him.
I also found this one very inspiring (I'm considering signing up for the puppy/tricks class a LoLaBu Land - looks like FUN!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8O3w7gok7Q
I've begun the leg crossing part of this one - but so far he's only standing.. need to figure out a way to keep him lying down and lifting his leg. Once he's reliably putting his paw on the stick I'm using I'm sure it will be easier.
Any other good trick ideas out there? Anything you're working on?

Re: Trick Thread
I have not really tried to do tricks with Ty. Tried the roll over but ended up with a fit of the giggles at his attempts. I do work on hand signals for the basics though but the bull dog I am baby sitting gives a high 5 when I put up my hand for the stay signal whcih sure as hell confuses my boy.
Lexus is damn good. Must take hours of training.

Re: Trick Thread
Ha ha.. I've never done much tricks before either.. Bajas knows high five and spin.. That's about it. They've both got great stays though - so staying with treats on paws/nose and so on probably counts as tricks.
I've recently realized that since I've taught Gummi a palm target I might not manage to teach high five.
I started on the wipe paws stuff today, though! Did like in the video with a treat under a towel and that worked great. I put the towel on the door mat I really want to use and he does "accidentally" scratch the mat as well so I click him for both. Once he does it on command I'm sure I can transfer it to the mat or a nail file. Hopefully I'll get the grip tape I want tomorrow so I can make the nail file.

Re: Trick Thread
Love it Julie, Clicker thing does not work for me. I am so unco-ordinated that I ended up clicking at all the wrong times so just gave it up. A finger snap is a warning now.

Re: Trick Thread
We have worked a bit with Daisy and some tricks/commands, she can sit, stand, down(laydown), high five, sit pretty, we are working on roll over, but she seems to lay down and roll on her back instead of all the way over, so we are still working there, stay, if it's bath time you say bath and she goes and sits in the bathtub waiting, you tell her back and she will back up from you, front means sit in front of you square and watch you, swing means to turn around in a circle from where she is. there are so many more we have worked with her but I cant remember them all.

Re: Trick Thread
I'm very happy with my nail file attempt! Since we'd already done the paw wiping part he took to it in no time. I'm guessing 30 seconds from I got the board out until he did the first scratch! I used grip tape intended for steps/boat decks or similar and it's almost too rough.. I think it might be useful to either get some fine sandpaper for the finish and put it on the other side of the board or perhaps file a bit of the edges once he's done a bit himself. We'll see.. Perhaps he'll do it more evenly once he's a bit more experienced, too. Dunno..
Might take few minutes before it appears, but here is the beginning of our nail file session

Sasha will sit, stay, lie down, roll over, come, she knows the word "up" and in the last couple of days she has learned to bark on command..
Next it trying to get her to do these while out for a walk.
