Dog nipples
Having another male dog around for comparison, I noticed that Tyson's nipples are really large and almost 'in the way' of a belly rub. I have noticed this before but did not think about it. The male bull dog is tiny little ones. Is this normal (or will Tyson ask for a gender reassignment someday)?

Re: Dog nipples
I think they all vary. Dempsey's are small, but there's a GSD near me (male) that has big 'uns!

Re: Dog nipples
Sorry, what?! I had to double take on this when reading it.
Male dogs...with nipples...I will have to grab Junior and manhandle him now to find this out (Oh, he's going to be so confused XD).

Re: Dog nipples
On the same subject, Lola has very long nipples (Is that what they are really called? I thought they were teets?)
Not knowing her history, I wondered whether the fact that they are quite prominent means she may have had pups in the past. She hasn't been spayed so it's a possibilty.

Re: Dog nipples
Yes most but not all male mammals have nipples. Some exceptions being mice and horses.
This is because in the womb a female is formed first (along with her nipples) and over the gestation period the foetus can change to male.
hope this answers it for you.

Re: Dog nipples
Herman has little nipple like things. Male, female or undecided, some dogs seem to have'em.Ty wrote:Having another male dog around for comparison, I noticed that Tyson's nipples are really large and almost 'in the way' of a belly rub. Re: Dog nipples
Kita was a pain in the rear following a phantom pregnancy with infected nipples after her first season. She kept scratching her nipples for ages after this to the point she would make them bleed at times, now she has quite misshapen nipples. Izzy's are almost non visible.
I've had male dogs, but I can't say I noticed their nipples being any particular shape or size.

Re: Dog nipples
Lol. These posts are funny if you really stop and think about the things we discuss. For the record, my males have small ones, but I have seen makes with bigger ones, just never anything close to a female.

Re: Dog nipples
Kathy, your explaination is helpful. Tysons teets/nipples are remarkably large for a male. Dos'nt seem to worry him though.

In regards to Mrsxg and Lola
Finally! Someone who has the same issue! My female Willow has never had a litter, is spayed, 2 years old and has such large nipples that the even the vet was taken aback and tested her to see if there was a uterine/ovary remnant. Nope. They look like spark plugs! She, too, has an extremely large vulva. This was another reason the vet did what he did. Sadly, my vet can't discover why Willow licks her vulva constantly. There is a lot of flesh there which he suggested I use unscented baby wipes every day or so to keep the area clean. I wipe her but there is nothing on the cloth that I can see. She has had discharge off and on and I feel putting her on antibiotics is just putting a bandaid on the issue. If anyone has any experience with this sort of problem, pleas let me know. Willow is my first AmStaff/Bull Mastiff mix. I have learned so much about the sweetness of the breed(s) and am constantly having to defend her to others who say, "Oh, you have a pit bull!" I try to educate and put people at ease. Noticed that Cesar Milan is doing a great job in educating people so as to break the fallacy that we have killer dogs that don't belong in society.

Re: Dog nipples
Hi Mary and Willow!
I think dogs are like humans - no boobs or genitalia are exactly like anyone else's.
My Kuchar's litter sister, who we see occasionally, had her first season and her nipples were very prominent afterwards, even though she wasn't pregnant or having a phantom.
If you are still concerned, post some photos (we're not shy on here) and we can advise better.

Re: Dog nipples
Thank you, I think I will. It is a bit awkward...nipples and all! Willow didn't even get to have a season to use that as a possible reason. The rescue encouraged us to spay her as soon as the vet would. Now if I can figure how to upload pics on this forum, I will! Challenged.....
