Post by Nicolleex3 Sun Dec 18 2011, 20:10

Hii all iv got a female 11 month old staff we also have a 11 yr old female spaniel, been thinking for a while about a companion to go with the staff as we've always had female dogs it seems natural 4 the next 1 to be female aswell.. but iv read on the internet they could end up fighting and others say they get on.. any ideas?

It is better if they are a different sex, but some people on the forum have got 2 of the same sex and they get on. I have only 1

For me, I've heard females can be territorial, I don't know how true this is.
But you could ask the vet or someone at Pets at home, I say Pets at home because we met a girl at ours when Ollie was a pup and she helps us alot.
Although I will boost male dogs, Ollie is brilliant, loving, caring.

It's perfectly possible to have girls that get along. But when the girls fight it's usually nastier than when the boys do (to the death versus to there's a clear winner) and once they fight they will usually never be friends again (while boys will generally agree on a pecking order after a fight and stick to it). Of course there are exceptions to this as with everything else, and some breeds are more prone to same sex aggression than others. I just wouldn't risk it, personally. If I was to have two dogs of the same sex I would make sure they are at LEAST 2 years apart in age to reduce the risk of conflict.

I have a staff and ambull and they are both male and they get on brilliantly! So yes it can definitely work with two females Smile it is however advised to get 1 of each sex

I have 2 girls but they are different breeds and there is 4 years between them so I don't know if that makes a difference. They get on fine just just the odd squabble when the older one can't be bothered with the puppy jumping all over her. I don't think I would leave them together when I am out of the house though because of what I've read, I wouldn't want to take the chance.
