I'm worried - Nights getting colder
Hello everyone,
I'm really worried for our staffy, Einstein. The nights are getting so cold. Will he be OK in his kennel? What additions can I make to his kennel to help with keeping him warm. I just think that if it was me in that cold I wouldn't last. Will he be OK - Any advice would be welcome.
Thank you
Fiona

Re: I'm worried - Nights getting colder
Thank you so much for getting back to me - I'm normally a forum reader than a forum writer. I'm delighted I'm writing now!
That was my first thought - I'd bring him in and wrap him in a big warm blanket. Should I? I'd be picking my gut feeling over breaking routine and maybe giving bad habits.

Where are you from out of interest? Moo could never be an outdoor dog, she gets cold on her walks

Re: I'm worried - Nights getting colder
I always put a hot water bottle in with Russell (but not if your dog will chew it, unless you wrap it in a good thick blanket) and you could make a flap for the entrance so the outside air doesn't get in, it will become a little hotbox!
just have to make sure your dog knows how to use the flap.
thats my advice, but I imagine it gets colder over there than it does here!

Re: I'm worried - Nights getting colder
I've known of staffs that live quite happily in an outside kennel, but I don't have personal experience of it. All my dogs have always lived indoors, and none of them have got into bad habits unless I've let them!
You will need to make sure that the entrance faces away from prevailing wind & that his bed is raised off the floor. Also that he has plenty of warm bedding. You might like to fit a low power infra red bulb in his kennel for the really cold nights.

Agree with Caryll. You could also get a cheap kenel and move it inside so you won't have to worry. Welcome from us and Suki.

Re: I'm worried - Nights getting colder
My two peneth ... I think some breeds are more able to deal with living outside than others, Staffy's not being one of them IMO
They just luuuurve resting by the fire/radiator far to much, generally carry very little body fat (if in shape ), and are obviously very short coated ...... I could never keep a dog of mine outside in the UK, especially in winter, but thats just my veiw

Hi and welcome from Rocky and me.
Rocky has his bed in the lounge and is nice and snuggly warm. He can usually be found on our bed though which is much warmer.

Re: I'm worried - Nights getting colder
Have to agree with Andy here a stafford is not designed for outside in our winters there coat is not thick enough to keep it warm. They are also people dogs and hate to be seperated from the family if you want a outdoor dog then the stafford isnt the one my 2 are in front of the fire were they belong

Re: I'm worried - Nights getting colder
IMO having staffy or any short hair dog living ourside is pretty cruel if you want an outdoor dog husky, japanese akita is your dog!
Re: I'm worried - Nights getting colder
I always thought a staffy or boxer should not be kept outside because of their short coats maybe ok in warmer weather but not in colder weather

Re: I'm worried - Nights getting colder
Hi and welcome. In my persoanl opinion Staffies are people dogs and therefore should be with you indoors for the most part. I am sure it is too cold where you are.

Re: I'm worried - Nights getting colder
Fiona, welcome to the forum from me and my girls Kita & Izzy.
Is there a reason that Einstein has to stay outside in his kennel?
My older girl was born and raised in the tropics and she used to sleep with her Bull Mastiff companion in a "closed in" (brick) verandah - but the temperature hardly ever went below 15 degrees at night. When I moved back down south the transition to sleeping inside just evolved as a natural occurrence. The younger one has only ever slept inside at night time.
Could you bring him into the laundry or kitchen and use a "baby-gate" to stop him getting into other areas of the house.
Any change in habit will require an adjustment so you can teach him inside rules at the same time.
Let us know how you get on and please ask for any help as you need it.

Re: I'm worried - Nights getting colder
Welcome! I am with the inside dog people. I personally have never had a dog that I kept outside. I like their company and when house trained they make a great companion. Honestly I think mine would die outside. It gets too hot and too cold here anyway. I think he would die of a broken heart first. I'm sure they can get used to anything, but keeping him inside will make sure you don't have to worry. That is just my oppinion and I really have 0 experience with keeping a dog outside anyways.
