Bald Patches on my Puppy
Hi. Have just joined this site 2day as i'm hoping for some advice about my 7 month old Staffy ( Cross - poss with a border collie) Since approx 4 months old she has started to lose hair under her armpits. She has no soreness or itching and it doesn't seem to bother her in the slightest so i think that rules out an Allergy or Mange? When i had her spayed at 6months i asked the vet to have a good look whilst she was under anesthetic and he didn't come up with anything and suggested it may just be hormone related and by a year old it should disappear. It seems to be getting slightly worse with smaller patches slowly appearing around her eyes and just in front of her ears. ALthough she doesn't seem aware of it and not in any discomfort, i worry about just ignoring it as i feel I could be missing something crucial to her health and well being. I wondered if it's stress related but although she is extremely lively and wants plenty of attention i think she is a happy girl and it never seems to bother her if i go out and I leave her on her own. In fact i know she just sneaks onto the sofa and goes to sleep. Nothing is chewed or destroyed whilst I'm out. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: Bald Patches on my Puppy
WOW thanks for such quick replies, I have been giving her cod liver oil tablets since she was about 3months old as she had puppy dandruff but a stopped a couple of weeks ago to try and see if this was actually causing the problem. Silly i know but just trying to find a cause!!!

The problem i think with staffys as well to if they get a cut or anything it takes ages for the fur to grow back my sisters shih tzu always scratches kaiser when playing and it takes a few months for the fur to grow back i have now banned her dog from coming lol

Re: Bald Patches on my Puppy
It could be demodex. It's the mite that causes mange, but don't worry all dogs are born with a small amount of them & they cause no problem. Sometimes they can multiply a little & although they cause no itchiness or soreness they can leave little bald patches.
My Dempsey (now 18 months) had this - one bald patch on the top of his tail & another right on top of his head. The one on his head has now gone, but every so often the one on his tail flares up again. As long as it isn't spreading or causing irritation then I wouldn't worry.
The only way find out for sure is for the vet to take skin scrapes, but he may not think it's necessary for such a small area affected.
Also, don't forget that staffords have VERY short fur & it's especially short around the eyes, the inside of the legs & the belly.

Re: Bald Patches on my Puppy
My bitch suffered with ear mites and then she started to go bald around her eyes the reason was the mite likes to burrow in warm and wet areas ie ears, eyes under armpits so my guess its mites. I cleared it with stronghold as it not only works on fleas it kills mites also. All her fur had returned after 3 weeks.

this is common niff in females who are whelping they also loose there hair around the nipples so the pups can get to the milk without too much stress.
