Excercise
How can I excersie Billy on a lead, we are having problems at the moment and he must be kept on a lead, so how do we excersie him properly.

Re: Excercise
At the moment he goes out for about 1 hour in the morning and evening but he was off lead and came home knackered. Throwing a toy and retrieving it knackered him out, but unfortunately due to Billy attacking 2 other dogs we think he needs to be kept on the lead, until be can asscess what is happening

Re: Excercise
The two long walks should for the most part be enough. Maybe some additional mental stimulation to wear him out or a couple games of tug.

Re: Excercise
get one of these long leads to give him abit of freedom 2 walk day hour each time should be plenty but you can do 3 times day to make sure
Re: Excercise
When we can't let Suki off lead to play two 45-60 minute walks usually tire her out. If she still has energy than a 20-30 game of tug does the trick. It's rare she has energy beyond that.
You could always use a backpack with a little bit of weight or ridea bike with him jogging beside you. Would take a bit of training though.

small dog male or females turns my sam on he hate any dogs that bigger then him but saying that he just made frieds with a female lab
Re: Excercise
It's weird how the some dogs and take offence to other dogs.
Jstaff don't know if I can still ride a bike but it is a good idea to look into. A guy I know jogs with his staff, which would be ideal except I think it would kill me I am so unfit, maybe now it is time to start for me to get fit

Re: Excercise
We can't let Chance off lead unless it's in the enclosed bit we go to as he has no recall yet, so have a 30foot lead if we can't go there for whatever reason and then he can still have a run about

Re: Excercise
Ledger pretty much stays on lead as his recall is selective. When possible he gets 2 or 3 'wee walks' round the park and a 1-2hr main walk which seems to do the trick or he comes running with me upto 5 miles at the moment. Otherwise I received a boomer ball delivery yesterday and 30 mins with that had him curled up snoring shortly after

Re: Excercise
we take our molly to our local county park and keep her on her lead as she is anti social to other dogs but i get alot of other dogs coming to her and end up telling there owners to put there dogs on lead, can be frustrating at times but i walk for around an hour before shes knackered then play ball with her in back garden before she chews its apart

Thanks Marty, I'll have a look for a pool, that's a good idea, you do that with Samson if I remember and he loves it

Re: Excercise
I'd also try do do some mental training, that tires them out much faster than physical exercise. Could be anything from scent work to party tricks, just as long as he has to use his mind.

Re: Excercise
I use the running beside the bike. Mine loves to run till he wipes himself out. I just have to be careful not to let him overdo it. Also, spring pole is a great exercise and if that doesn't work, a flirt pole works as well. This with a walk at the opposite end of the day should do the trick, especially if you can do a little obedience training (could be simple stuff or more advanced) at various times because it is mentally stimulating to them. More advanced would be sent work or finding people. Also, long down stays or entry/exit work is also pretty good.

Re: Excercise
Violet and I go for a jog around a local field every day (I only let her off the lead when her dad is with us - not confident of letting her off and having to go home admitting I lost the dog! Although her recall is excellent, she can have her moments). Usually this tires us both out, especially me, but we also have a swingball set, and we bat the ball whilst she spends ages chasing after it, even though she can never catch it.

Anything you WANT to do?lynne wrote:Aniemother wrote:I'd also try do do some mental training, that tires them out much faster than physical exercise. Could be anything from scent work to party tricks, just as long as he has to use his mind.

You have different versions of scent work.. a few examples:
- tracking (you could introduce tracking exercises as part of your regular walks, that would combine the two ways of exercise which may be good, the tracks won't be very long initially so it won't take you much time to prepare)
- finding something with your scent on it
- finding a specific object, perhaps your keys or cell phone or something you tend to misplace?
- detecting any specific scent, perhaps something you have in the house (marking on earl grey tea, peanut butter or whatever) and then slowly making it harder to find
- useful detections like warning you if there is smoke
Useful tricks
- "tidying up", finding toys or objects you point at and place them in an designated area like a box for the toys
- opening/closing doors
- fetching specific objects like the remote, your keys or other objects after learning their names
- going to his bed when the door bell rings to avoid cases of Excessive Greeting Disorder (if this is an issue)
- turning on or off the lights
One way to teach a fetch to a bowl: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2iLwdJJLw8 (I would probably have taught the dog to go to the bowl before adding the ball, don't know if that was done here)
Useless tricks
- roll over
- high five
- spin
- bow
- marking a specific object with paw or nose, for instance a book or picture with a staffie - then the command could be something like please showing your guests what's the prettiest/most clever breed of dog. (Bajas did the pug book and my whippet the whippet book.. LOL)
- perch work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEOn_6wlUhw&feature=BFp&list=PL2521820BCC862BC0 (can just be used as the "elephant trick" rather than with an aim to use it for something else)

Re: Excercise
A sling pole or backpack are both great ways to tire a dog out. Billy is old enough for the sling pole but I wouldn't do the backpack just yet but getting him used to it now would be okay
