Post by adrian smith Sun Jul 24 2011, 12:43

hello everyone im adrian my partner is b,we live in france and have a purebreed american staff called marley.after having english staffs when lived in england we bought a american one .iv read alot of confusion about the american staff on this site.so here goes with some information .first of they all come from england origons.yes the americans crossed them to make them bigger with what im not sure as was at least 200 years ago .yes they are banned in uk due to kennel club not reconising as a breed they say its a pit bull.we have spoke to police in uk and because mine is purebreed and has passport insurance and a licence in france she could come to uk on special licience in france you have to have all these documents and has to be muzzled in public, she is about 45cm to the shoulders .most american staffs are less bulky and longer leged with a square like head.than the english one.but there are ones that look like english ones nearly impossible to tell difference.there are so many staffs in england that look like mine .as far as them being pits yes they share simalar genes but were breed for show in america so they were crossed back with staffys to get rid of pit genes .they are reconised as a pure breed everywere except england.there is one falt though the ears they are not so much dipped over like the english one and alot bigger like mine some stand upright. alot off them are cut,not mine.at the end of the day staffys . american staff . and pits are fundermently the same dog just different shapes and sizes. photos of marley will be posted soon

the american staff was a pitbull type the kennel didn't want anything to do with "pitbulls" so a group of owner made a standard of their pertect pitbull and call it a american staffordshire terrier and the american kennel club and other accepted them as a breed..

so really they are pitbull but with a official standard

Hi & welcome to the forum.

The original dogs that went to america were not staffordshire bull terriers at all, but a motley collection of fighting dogs. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier breed was formed a long time afterwards!

In the USA they go to great pains to explain that the American Staffordshire Terrier is not descended from The Staffordshire Bull Terrier at all, even though they may share some very distant ancestors.

The APBT is not recognised by the AKC, and in order to be able to register & show their dogs in America, some fanciers drew up a standard, and named the breed the American Staffordshire Terrier.

Way, way back there may be a few common ancestors. But the fighting dogs at the mid to end of the 19th century were vastly different to our staffs, and were a motley collection of all sorts of shapes & sizes. The mix of bull & terrier only came about when bull baiting was outlawed in 1835.

The APBT is recognized and shown in the UKC. A lot of dogs are dual registered as AmStaffs in the AKC and APBTs in the UKC because the breeds are almost identical.

i know of a one top american stafordshire terrier that register with AKC as american staffy & registered with UKC as a pitbull. i think this one of many reason why people do get confused with breeds

Hello Smile So does the american kennel club identify the american staffordshire terrier as a breed in its own right with a breed standard?

Yes. The AmStaff is recognised, but not the APBT.
