Stereotypes and general ignorance

So I’ve recently discovered videos by Caesar Milan and Victoria Stilwell. I find their approaches to the various problems interesting to contemplate but I am gobsmacked by the ignorance of alot of these owners
Some even make you wonder if it isn’t a setup for the telly but when you see the behaviour of the animals in a world without limits and direction, not very surprising.
Interesting to see how much of the trainer’s work is to educate the owners and sort out their personal problems rather than working on the dogs. Proof that so many dogs are emotional sponges to their environment.

A couple of weeks ago, I attended an organized hike with a friend. Whilst registering, one woman arrived with a golden retriever. One look at Opium (the “mini rottweiler”), the woman froze, swung around and walked a detour to avoid being anywhere near us Opium wasn’t even paying the slightest attention to her dog, and she was generally being very well behaved in a new environment for her.

It’s not the acquisition of a dog which gives instant knowledge

There's no cure for stupid, but there is a cure for ignorance - information!

I can't abide Cesar Milan. He has no qualifications & kicks dogs. Victoria Stillwell has her heart in the right place, but she really irritates me. I prefer Nando Brown & Chiraq Patel.

You probably won't- he had them removed from the scenes. It was in an episode with a husky type as far as I remember. He also punches dogs: he calls it a 'tap' but you can hear the thump.

Plus, of course, he follows the 'pack leader' theory which has been debunked.

I can't watch him, he pins dogs down for submission + pack leader crap! I know he gets results but through fear training
I'm following & part of Absolute Dogs, games & reward training Katy's loving the games & shows me far more attention now whilst out. Also helps with her reactiveness as i can distract her more easily

To be honest, I started watching these videos to cheer me up when I felt everything was going wrong. I was particularly looking into the reasons why a certain behaviour is displayed.
At the end of the day, we’re not doing too badly at all.

Most dogs trained through force/fear eventually overcome their fear & retaliate. You need to address the underlying problem with calmness, care & reward for the correct behaviour. Kicking, pinning & confrontation are short term cures unless you frighten a dog so much that he never gets over it. I wouldn't want a dog that was always scared of going wrong.

@Nifty Did you know Milan has been banned from some countries? Holland is one.
