Herbie says Hello to his people!!

Hi!!

Herbie is a staffie / american staffie cross we got from the RSPCA. We were warned he would either be hyper or a coach potato, thank goodness we got the potato!

He is accident prone, and has joint issues, but we love him anyway! He has been bitten in the face, stung by wasps twice, caught his face on an electric fence, twice, had infected hair follicles, an operation on a back leg for a floating patella and an operation on a front leg for dysplasia. And he's not even two years old! He has recently been diagnosed with possible arthritis as a side effect of the operations, ho hum!

From reading other posts, he seems to be a fairly typical staff, lazy, greedy, friendly, stubborn, spoiled and completely unaware that he is 30 kilos. He has pulled my Mum over, knocked me over, broken my finger and shut his own foot in a garden chair as it collapsed, with him sitting on it.

We get mixed reactions from other dog owners, mostly positive fortunately, and he is getting better trained, the harness and whistle were a brilliant idea. The periods of rest and short walks after the various operations set him back, but we're getting there. But there are still people who put their dogs on lead when they see us coming, so I do the same, and I am always cautious round children and old folk, just because he is bargy and loves everyone, whether they want to be loved or not.

I would love to be out somewhere with other staffies so I didn't have to keep saying, he's friendly, just big, or that jaw snapping is just in play, not aggressive etc! We met another staffie and owner a while back and we just stood and talked while the dogs barged and crashed about till they wore themselves out, perfect!

Anyway, rant over, I guess all newbies do it, it just nice to find a forum of fellow staffie slaves, sorry, staffie owners!!

So is this your first Staffy ?

Yes, he is and only my second dog, I was raised a cat person! We have two cats who tolerate Herbie, and are OK until they run and then he's off! But then they sit on a wall or a shed just out of reach and torment him! Our old dog was a heinz 57 and we had her before the cats so it's a different relationship all round.

30kg is quiet some size so I guess cuddles on the sofa are gonna be fun! Cats taunting is always fun to watch, they think they are soooo clever that said, we have people here that have posted pics of their Staffy cuddled up fast asleep with the cat!

I'm on my second Staffy, first one was a pedigree gifted to us and then I had a family and now we are owned by Flo who spent a short while in hotel Battersea.

We found people used to pick up their handbag dogs in the park and I used to come out with comments like "it's ok she's had dinner" but that gets boring after a while. Nowadays we tend to ignore the negative and Flo is great at showing how well behaved a deaf Staffy can be, so just be confident when out with Herbie and show how great he is. Unfortunately I can't offer any help with the bull in a china shop thing, most staffs are the same

Oh good, glad I'm not the only one! My daughter says I have a staffie problem, but it's just two tee shirts, two books and a fridge magnet, but now I'm on this forum it's all downhill isn't it!?

I just tried to post photos, and while the post preview worked, I got a message saying 'New members are not allowed to post external links or emails for 7 days. Please contact the forum administrator for more information.' so I guess I'll have to wait.

Glad Flo is well behaved, I'm sure Herbie will get there, but the American staffie in him means he has longer legs, so is about the size of a labrador. I may use the 'lunch' reply though, we have a lot of cockerdoodles and puggles etc round here too!

Anything you don't want chewed should be removed, this includes those expensive shoes/coats/laptops... Ok I'm kiddin about the laptops. Wait, remove the laptop.

Sorry about the picture thing, the forum chooses random people and makes them wait the 7 days for some reason.

Oh don't! We are on our 9th lead, just takes a second and nom nom nom, done! No laptop damage but he did chew through two remote controls! and bag handles, shoe laces, shoes, and don't even go there with the toys!

His record is a ball we bought which he punctured before I had finished unloading the car! He loves toys that squeak, but they don't squeak for long ... he loves toys that he can flick from side to side and hit himself in the face with, killing them I guess, and the garden is always covered in stuffing from toys that are now sleeping with the fishes!

Oh, and he punctured the bottom of the paddling pool before we had finished setting it up ...

No worries about the forum picture thing, I guess it's all for security, no problem, I won't take it personally !

Thanks to everyone for their welcome's!! And for sharing stories, nice to know we're not the only ones with a chewy, greedy, sleepy, cuddly bonkers dog! And yeah, what is it with getting the squeaker out first! For some reason i can't upload photos for another week, it's a random security thing I understand, but I will post some as soon as I can! Thanks! Herbie likes ice too, when the fishman comes in his van he gives Herbie a handful of fishy ice on the rear bumper to lick off, happy boy!
