The Puppy I'm considering at the moment is all white apart from a couple of brown spots by her nose..her parents are white with browna rings as are her siblings..I know it is said that white boxers are more prone to being dead or blind. Is this the same for staffys? If so, will this pup fall into the same risk category as she has a couple of brown spots?

As far as I'm aware yes that's correct, I've worked with 3 deaf dogs and all have been white staffies! I've also met hundreds of white staffies with perfectly fine hearing.

I was under the impression, that as long as there is a little colour somewhere, then they aren't so much at risk of being deaf or blind.

Do either of the parents have any health problems?

I honestly have no idea whether the parents do or not. Potential health issues won't put me off getting her as we have fallen for her. I guess my only concern if she is at higher risk of hearing and/or sight problems is how I'd train her, particularly if she has difficulty with both as it would make verbal and hand signals a little difficult and wouldn't leave me with a lot of options.

Are you getting her from a breeder? If so the parents should be KC registered.

depends on parents genetics but not every white dog is deaf or cat without ebing tested really hard to know.

I'm pretty sure the parents aren't kc registered. The 'breeder' owns mum and dad but the litter were a surprise...the pups are cheap and they just want them in their new homes asap. I've not been asked a single question on what home they are coming to. I know Casper isn't kc reg but I was at least questioned a little on where he was coming to. I know I'm taking a risk with this one but I'd rather her come here to a family home where she will be a loved pet, than going to some young lad where she will be nothing more than a status symbol, money maker or worse.

I wouldn't worry too much until you know you need to. If it happens then talk to people like Ian here who has a deaf dog. I know some people use a buzz collar, which gives a light vibration that says to the dog 'look at me', and you can then give a hand signal. So there are ways if you need, but you probably won't.
