Thumbsdown Name change

Post by stacyac78 Thu Sep 04 2014, 13:55

We have purchased a 2 year old dog and my kids are wanting to change his name, he's been used to his name for 2 years what are the chances of him getting used to a new one, and would anyone recommend/not advise it.

TIA

What is his name now ?

Maybe go for something that sounds very similar to his name.

Rocky was from a rescue centre and although we wouldn't have chosen his name we decided not to change it and have him get even more confused by another change.

Probably as easy as teaching him any new command. A name to a dog is only an attention grabber. Chose his new name, (something with 2 syllables is easier, bob by or arch ie sounds more appealing to a dog rather than something like gus or dave, especially from a man) and simply say the word and treat him. The more he reacts to the word the more praise you give him, but don't go over the top, you don't want him to go mental everytime you say it! Only use the word for the positive things he does for the time being.

Great believer in tone of voice - Moo has and has had several names, even now my mum and walker call her missy (her original rescue name) I call her Moo or Schmooze Xx

It shouldn't be a problem. I'm sure whatever you call him he will get used to and will adapt quickly.

If he was a stray and his name unknown you would have to give him a new name anyway. Im sure they soon get used to it especially if you call him it from the start. Or as already said choose one that sounds similar to his one now.

My boy Travis was called Tyson when we first went to see him. When he decided he wanted to come home with us, we didn't like his name he isn't look like a Tyson . And our neighbour has a really stupid rottie cross called Bruno. So Tyson became Travis . He's happy , never seen such a happy and friendly dog of any breed. He's ours and he is loved
