They need to maintain the rivers & ditches, at the bottom of our village is a river that every year flooded the field & spread across the road. New owners took over a couple of years ago & had the river bed dredged & the banks cleared since then no flooding! I cant say that it would help on the Somerset levels because of the landscape.

Yep as Jen said, the brook at the back of me always flooded 3-4 times a year in places the usual path would be over ankle deep in water (usually 3-6ft lower down the other side of the wall) they have done a lot of clearing of all the undergrowth on the banks etc and so far this year not a bit of flooding

I feel sorry for all involved, I would hate things like that happen to me. But part of me wonders why you would buy a house some where that is prone to this sort of thing.
But for safety reasons, humans, pets and wildlife, they need to sort something out.

How can people blame the government or anyone for that matter... its been the nuttiest weather since records began and yet everyone shoud have known about it... having had a massive sink hole appear at the highest point in hemel no where seems to be safe...get flooded or dragged into a massive hole in the ground..
In all honesty dredging wouldn't have stopped the somerset levels flooding although it may not have been so bad. Im from the fens which is meters below sea level and they havent dredged for years...differance? No crap weather but according go my parents no so much as a puddle

I agree, the agencies involved have to get together and maintain the rivers, like dredging etc. I do believe though once water has touched the ground it is then owned by the water authority so they must also take some responsibility and decide what they are going to do with all their water.
