Hi everyone

Just after advice really, Harley is 4 months now and we use a collar, he does pull a fair bit at times more so if we r walking with other dogs, do u think a harness is better for a staffy pup or stick with the collar and just continue with training to stop pulling, someone told me harnesses put pressure on the heart and to. Stay clear of them .

Why do you do to stop the pulling ?

You may want to try just stopping when he pulls then turn around and walk in the opposite direction it work for some. You could also try a Canny Collar or a Halti. Check the links below for descriptions of both, search on the web for cheaper prices though.

I use a lead but did use a harness when I first got her as it gave me more control.

We use both with a double ended lead so we have more control Smile

I use a harness, daisy has always walked much better in one, although she's never been too bad to be fair Smile

I use a collar mainly because I like to have control of the pearly white teeth end!Big Grin

Try this (make sure you have some treats handy)...

As soon as your pup walks ahead of you say "Heel" and immediately turn and walk the other way - don't wait for him, just walk. The second he reaches your side, praise him and then say "Heel" again and turn back the way you were going in the first place. THis time, when he gets to your side, praise & treat. If you do that every time he starts to walk ahead of you he'll soon cotton on! Always do heelwork training at a fairly brisk pace - stops them from thinking about what they're going to do next!Big Grin

I also use a harness and collar with a double ended lead .. the harness gives better body control generally (and removes pressure from the neck/throat) but I do like to have control of the pointy end Smile

As they can still pull in a harness, a well fitted harness that distributes weight evenly is really important .. and training not to pull (as Caryl explained above) is still essential.

Thanks for advice everyone, very strange two days Harley and me have had, no pulling on lead in fact the opposite, won't walk- leave house walk a few yards and he sits and won't move, I try to persuade him with treats sometimes works sometimes doesn't, as soon as he sees someone walking he stands and wannts to walk again, he is nearly 16 weeks,.what amount of walk time do u recommend, forgot to add this is when walking round neighbourhood. If at a park or woods he fine, is he playing games with me, thanks.
