Dempsey gets this from time to time - but only when he gets, let us just say, excited! It takes anything from a couple of minutes to 15 minutes for it to go down. When he was your boy's age it would happen nearly every other day (sometimes 2 or 3 times a day), but as he grew older it got less & less as he learnt to control his 'urges'!

It's very normal for a dog and is due to the hormones rushing in & they just need to settle. As long as he can recover within about 15 minutes, and his penis doesn't get stuck in it's sheath so that he can't retract it, I wouldn't worry too much. Just let him alone & it'll go.

A vet's answer to 90% of the problems in dogs is neutering.Rolling Eyes

Well, if your bitches are entire then I'd get him castrated anyway, although I'd leave it for another 6 months if possible. You don't want any accidental litters!

Mind you, unless your bitches are in season (and as one has only recently had pups, that's unlikely) then he won't feel any different towards them than if they were spayed!

You could try the suprelorin implant first, which nullifies the testosterone for a time, to see whether that will have any effect, but I would look at getting either him castrated (at the right time) or your bitches spayed asap.

In that case I'd wait and see what he's like after they have been spayed. Another couple of months won't make much difference.

I have 2 males, one is entire the other neutered and BOTH still get the erm bulb when they are excited, so neutering is not guaranteed to fix that
