Tick! Empty Tick!

Post by jo garnett Thu Jul 25 2013, 20:51

I thought Chloe had a scab on her neck (nothing too rare for either of them as they play fight a lot). My son's just said it's the most enormous tick. We both panicked....... I said twist it and pull so he did and got this wriggling bug thing out so I'm hoping we've got it all.... Any advice greatly appreciated!! I've dabbed her neck with antiseptic and she happens to be at the vet's on Saturday for her booster.

Thanks for that :-) I'm going to put a little bit of hydrocortisone cream on and see how it looks in the morning. Nasty thing it was - a big grub thing with wriggling legs! The video said to kill it - I'm afraid my son just threw it into a bush in a panic Crying or Very sad

When my daughter was young I found one attached to her as she had been rolling around with our gsds (long haired) and also found some on the dogs I got told to fine the dogs a small amount of garlic in their food and 15 years later I have not had one appear

Ugh! Thankfully I have never had to deal with these ghastly things myself.

Haven't watched the vid as it would give me the heebie-jeebies, but as I understand it the important thing is not to leave the head behind, and that the best thing to do is to smother the horrible thing with Vaseline so it can't breathe and will detach it's head, drop off and you kill the b****r.

Luckily the vet can have a look on Saturday ....

Let us know!

The vet said today 'well done' when I told him about the tick and how we'd removed it - blimey!!!! I was fully expecting another £80 to be added to today's bill for him looking at her neck and then giving us some liquid to dab on it...... not really cynical am I?! He's such a lovely vet though and I do trust him. The first thing he does when either Lola or Chloe go in to see him is get down on the floor and let them lick his face and then plays 'rough stuff' for a few minutes. They adore him Big Grin

Aww so please that went well! Nasty things ticks - our very golden retriever I think had a couple, glad the vets went well, sounds like he has a lot of time for your dogs too.

I hate bugs with a passion, especially parasitic ones. Luckily none of my dogs has ever contracted one - well done Jo for dealing with it properly and getting your son to get rid of it!

Love the sound of your vet - he's got the "dog touch".

as long as you got the head out and the area is clean you should be fine...i was always told its best to burn the ticks as in throw them in a fire to make sure they dont spread Smile
