It's actually an overpriced very poor quality food, with far to much grain and additives

But if it works for your dog then that's the main thing

Not the best food as Ella has stated but my cousin has had her Labrador on it since birth, he's now nearly 2 and has been great for him.

I don't like it - far too expensive & too many fillers. There are much better, cheaper foods around.

My vet stocks it (in fact, nothing else but Science Plan! One wall of the waiting room is devoted to it). I've never used it because it is so darn expensive, so haven't bothered to look at the ingredients - interesting to hear that it is full of fillers! Thank you Wainwrights for your trays - I've finally found something my fussy-pants of a doggy will eat!

Interesting, I am pants at reading ingredients, Moo is on hills prescription diet, J/D for mobility because of the arthritis. She has done really well on it, its not endorsed by my vets but they recommended it. If its that bad I would love to know, and if so what would you suggest to aid her mobility?

The ingredients for j/d

Whole Grain Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Flaxseed, Soybean Mill Run, Brewers Rice, Soybean Meal, Pork Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Chicken Liver Flavor, Powdered Cellulose, Fish Oil, Lactic Acid, Potassium Chloride, L-Lysine, Calcium Carbonate, Choline Chloride, Iodized Salt, DL-Methionine, Vitamin E Supplement, vitamins (L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), L-Threonine, Taurine, Soy Lecithin, Glucosamine Hydrochloride, minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), L-Tryptophan, L-Carnitine, preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid, Chondroitin Sulfate, Phosphoric Acid, Beta-Carotene, Rosemary Extract.

The first ingredient is corn and see all the unnecessary ingredients.

For glucosamine to have a good affect on their joints it should really be with chondroitin and MSM, and this food only has 1 of them.

If it works for Moo then that is great, but it is of poor quality and there are much better foods for less money out there

So what would you recommend, I can't feed raw, she has aloe vera gel and yumove, she hasn't needed the metacam in months so no chemicals in her diet, for supplements for the arthritis what would you suggest as a kibble?

I know you can't do raw, but I would still recommend f4d unless the new recipe doesn't suit moo.

I'd try a kibble with as little to no grain as possible some that might suit moo could be:

applaws
acana
bob & lush
eden
simpsons premium

Some are more expensive then others but they are some i can think off the top of my head. Most of the do contain gluc/chon/msm which is great for her joints

I feed darcy arden grange--> ocean white fish & potato sensitive.

Some of the key ingredients that Arden Grange use are Glucoasmine, Chondroitin and MSM. These key ingredients are key to promote the dogs health and mobility.

So is the j/d diet just a gimmick? And then why would the vets recommend it? Just interested as if she could be on a better quality food that would have the supplements that this has I would, this costs £60 a month so cost isn't an issue?

Yes IMO its a gimmick, and don't forget vets get huge commission if you buy hills, they are also lectured by hills in dog nutrition.

What ever food you get regardless of the name, or what the food is intended for the most important thing is the ingredients and the quality of them

vets are brainwashed into thinking certain foods are great

Royal canin is another god awful over priced foods, so no better in that respect.

If moo does good on it's the main thing, BUT it isn't great quality thats all

If your paying that much a month you should maybe try swapping to eden it is in my opinion the best dry food on the market.

I feed a raw diet, and it's a diet of raw meat, bones and offal

I buy from a supplier and go through probably about 10kg of food a week between my two Smile

A review for one of the science diet dry foods! You'll be able to find the prescription diets on there as well. I used this site a lot when picking dry food.
